Quick Home Remedies For Dry Hair

Arizona’s dry heat is no friend to the health of our hair.  Not to mention, the idea of continuously spending time and money at the hair salon for chemically made conditioning masks isn’t ultra appealing either. Luckily, there are a few at home remedies that can help with naturally conditioning dry hair.

Coconut Oil
What doesn’t coconut oil help with?  From being a healthier oil to cook with to an excellent skin moisturizer, coconut oil does it all! In addition to all of its other miracle purposes, it’s even used to help strengthen and condition hair. Apply the oil in its liquid form to damp hair, and leave in for approximately an hour.  Wash the oil out while still in the shower, and appreciate your healthy, renewed locks once dried.

Egg Yolk and Avocado
Both eggs and avocado are considered to be superfoods. However, not only are they filled with a multitude of health benefits, they are also great for moisturizing hair.  All you’ll need is half of an avocado and two egg yolks.  Mix the two ingredients together well and then apply to wet or damp hair.  Let it sit for about 20 minutes, and then wash out for silky smooth results.

Yogurt, Honey and Olive Oil
Honey in your hair? Who would have thought! Mix one-teaspoon olive oil with one-tablespoon honey and a fourth of a cup of plain yogurt until all of the ingredients are blended together well.  Apply the mixture to damp hair, and leave it in for about 15 minutes before you wash it out completely.

Banana and Almond Oil
These two ingredients are the couple of the year for your hair.  Mash up half of a banana and mix with one teaspoon almond oil.  Apply this mixture to the bottom half of your damp hair, and let sit for about half an hour, then wash.  The proteins and thickness of the banana will help to protect your hair, while the oil works to add moisture and soften your mane, rendering it far healthier than before.

Things To Know About Laser Hair Removal

No one wants to deal with mortifying waxing experiences, messy at-home creams or last minute bikini season shaving. When it comes to removing unwanted body hair, laser hair removal is both an effective and long-lasting solution. The SPA at The SHAW Center offers the Lumenis LightSheer Infinity for 75% faster treatments than the average hair reduction session, and it can be used on all skin types. There are a few things you should know before setting on your way to a silky smooth lifestyle.

Avoid the Sun Before Your Treatments
Laser hair removal works best on dark hair and pale skin, so if you’re tan the effectiveness of treatments can be hindered. When your skin is tanned, the laser has to be reduced, which can render it less effective as well. Additionally, you’ll need to keep your recently treated areas out of  sunlight, so it’s best to begin these treatments during autumn or winter.

Don’t Expect Instant Results
We wish it only took the one treatment, but good things take time. While our SPA offers the gold standard in laser hair removal with the LightSheer Infinity, we still recommend anywhere from five to six sessions to see drastic results.

You Can’t Target the Whole Body at Once
If someone tells you that you can, you’ve been seriously misinformed. While our SPA is all about helping you to achieve your aesthetic goals, we’re big on safety too. There’s only a certain amount of cosmetic laser light and heat your body can safely absorb each session.

Consistency is Key
Your hair follicles are on their own growth cycle, so those who see the best results will typically go in for treatment every four to six weeks in order to maximize eliminating the most follicles. This time frame also allows the dead hair shafts to fall out on their own.

Our SPA is offering a free laser hair removal package when you buy the first one now through the end of September. Call our SPA at (480)767-1900 to learn more about this special.

How to Properly Prepare for Your Tattoo Removal Appointment

It’s unlikely that you’ll go through life having absolutely no regrets, but if there’s some you’re able to erase, then we’re all for it.  Not all tattoos are timeless, and that’s why we have a solution. The PicoSure Tattoo Removal laser is the gold standard in tattoo removal, and our SPA not only offers this service but also highly experienced and well-trained laser technicians to help you achieve your desired results.

Be Realistic About Your Expectations

Your tattoo may take more than one session to fade away and can take between 4-8 months of treatments to achieve the desired results.  Also, the outcome of the treatments may vary depending on the depth of needle penetration used by the artist, as well as the color of the ink.  While it is normal to experience a little pain, the PicoSure Tattoo Laser at the SPA at the SHAW Center is far more comfortable than other tattoo removal technologies.

Excellent Aftercare is a Must

You may experience some side effects after the procedure that your technician can discuss in depth with you.  It’s very important to ice the treated area when needed and to not pick at any blisters if they should arise.  Be very delicate with the area after the procedure in order to ensure you won’t scar or get an infection.

Ask as Many Questions as You Need

As with most procedures, it’s vital to feel completely comfortable in the hands of your technician.  Don’t hesitate to ask any and all questions about post care and pre-treatment, and feel free to reach out to your technician after the procedure for additional follow-up questions. Whether you’re wondering how easily a certain color will be to remove or the time in which it will take to erase your particular tattoo, we have an answer.  Never be afraid to ask the questions that are important to you, so that your technician can provide you with the best overall experience.

5 Toxic Makeup Ingredients to Avoid

What you put in your body is just as much of a concern as what you put on it. Your skin can easily absorb most products, and that’s why when it comes to cosmetics it’s essential to know exactly the types of ingredients that go into your makeup. We’ve rounded up five potentially harmful ingredients that could be living in your cosmetic bag this very minute.

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE, AKA Teflon®)

PTFE can be found in some foundations, pressed or loose powder, bronzer, blush and many other makeup products.  PTFE provides a smooth and sleek finish, which is why it’s desirable among makeup lines. PTFE can also be disguised as other ingredients such as DEA-C8-18 or Perfluoroalkylethyl Phospate.

Lead, arsenic, mercury, etc.

These ingredients can be found in lip products, eyeliner, as well as foundation. Heavy metals can be added intentionally or found as contaminants. However, their presence in cosmetics is only restricted in the United States, while they are completely banned in Canada, Japan, and the EU.

Talc is an ingredient found within some foundations, eye shadows and even baby powder.  The primary uses of Talc are to make products appear opaque on the skin, as well as to prevent caking.  Talc can pose health risks when it contains asbestos, so always search for companies that certify that their talc is free of asbestos on their websites and products.

Butylated Compounds

Butylated Compounds (BHA, BHT) are present in some lip products, sunscreen and face makeup. BHT typically serves as an antioxidant and preservative within makeup, food and animal feed.  The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) claims that there is a fair amount of evidence to conclude that BHT is a human irritant.

Carbon Black

Carbon Black can be found in eyeliner, mascaras, eye shadows and other face makeup.  Carbon black that is available for commercial use contains polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are possible human carcinogens.  Carbon Black can also be identified as D & C Black No. 2, Acetylene Black, or Thermal Black and is restricted, but no banned, by the United States and the Europe Union.

5 Causes That Are Secretly Aging Your Skin

Aging is inevitable, so it’s important to at least be cautious of the factors that can exacerbate this process in order to stall the hands of time when we can. While some causes seem more obvious than other, such as sun exposure and smoking, there are a multitude of other under-the-radar variables that can also lead to a weathered complexion.

Spraying Perfume/Cologne On Your Neck

Did you know that one of the main ingredients in perfume and cologne is alcohol? Alcohol increases your photosensitivity, which means you’re more likely to sunburn in the areas where you’ve applied the fragrance. Our necks and chests are the areas on our bodies that are most susceptible to signs of aging, so it’s best to spray your clothes with the scent in order to minimize your chances of premature aging.

Fad Diets

Juicing, the “Raw Food Diet” and the “Master Cleanse” are all examples of fad diets.   Fad diets can eliminate a beneficial food group out of the mix, which means your body isn’t getting what it entirely needs.  Your skin requires lots of nutrients, antioxidants and protein in order to age well.  Next to water, protein is the most plentiful substance in your body.

Your Pillow

Most of us have a favorite side of our body that we like to sleep on, whether it’s on the left, right, or even your stomach.  When you sleep on a particular side,  your face is continuously smashed into the pillow night after night, which can weaken the connective tissue and collagen on that certain favored side.  When it comes to combatting premature aging, it’s best to at least attempt to sleep on your back in order to keep skin smooth and symmetrical.

Gel Manicures

Gel manicures look incredible, but the process of drying the gel polish under the UV or LED nail lamps puts your hands at risk for premature aging. Both UV and LED nail lamps produce UVA rays, so the Skin Cancer Foundation recommends applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen 20 minutes prior to UV light exposure.

Eye Makeup

It’s incredibly important to remove makeup before falling asleep each night, but it’s equally as important to be as gentle as possible when removing makeup.  Particularly when it comes removing eye makeup, the constant rubbing and scrubbing can cause the delicate skin on and around the eye to wrinkle and age.  Always use gentle rubbing motions when removing eye makeup, and stick to an oil-based eye makeup remover that will help to breakdown the product.

Common Skin Myths Debunked

When you're focused on skin health and aesthetics, it’s inevitable to run into your fair share of myths and assumptions. There are plenty of skin-related myths out there, and we feel that it’s time to shed some light on a few of those tall tales. We’ve rounded up some of the most common ones in order to debunk them once and for all.

Cellulite is directly correlated to a poor diet.

Cellulite is caused by a variety of different factors including, genetics, lifestyle, hormones and diet.  Cellulite is also more prevalent in women than men; in fact, at least 90% of all women will experience cellulite during their lifetime.  The appearance of cellulite can be reduced by regular exercise and a diet low in fat. However, even individuals that are lean and eat healthy can still experience this issue.

What you eat has no effect on your skin.

A few studies were conducted in the 70’s claiming that diet and acne have no direct correlation.  Since then, these findings have been falsified, and it’s now been determined that diets with a high-glycemic index can in fact lead to breakouts.  Acne flare-ups along the jawline can also indicate an allergy or sensitivity to dairy products.

Sunscreen/sunblock is the same thing.

Sunblock offers physical protection by sitting atop of the skin in order to provide a barrier between the skin and UVB light.  Sunscreen offers chemical protection by absorbing into the skin, providing a barrier between the skin and UVA light.  UVA and UVB light are completely different light spectrums, and the Skin Cancer Foundation recommends protection from both, which is available in sunscreens labeled as “broad-spectrum.”

You will age just like your Mom.

Genetics play an obvious and vital role within our bodies.  However, when it comes to aging, genes only a small part since so many other factors can affect our aging processes.  Smoking, sun exposure, diet and skin care regimes can all transform the composition of our skin and how well we age.  If mom looks great, be sure to follow her footsteps and limit sun exposure, wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen that you can reapply throughout the day, adopt a nutritious diet, acquire a simple yet effective skin care regime and don’t smoke.

Why Men Should Adopt a Skincare Routine

At one point in time, we've all seen a man somehow able to complete his morning/evening regime with a 3- in-one product.  Judgment and exasperated sighs aside, you can’t blame the poor guy.  It wasn’t until recently that the men’s skincare industry evolved beyond its usual, simple bar of soap. It’s important for men, just as women, to adopt a proper skincare routine in order to ensure aging more gracefully and preventing stubborn breakouts. We’ve rounded up some product concepts that we think are essential in perfecting the perfect men’s skincare routine.

An oil based cleanser/gentle cleanser:

Because men tend to have thicker and oilier skin than women, they need a cleanser that removes oil and sweat without drying out the face.  An oil-based cleanser is ideal for oily skin because it doesn't entirely strip the skin of its natural oils.  For men with dryer skin, a more gentle and fragrance-free cleanser would be appropriate as well. You should also wash your face every evening in order to remove the sweat and dirt that’s accumulated throughout the day.

A moisturizer with SPF:

Shaving can take a toll on your skin, especially for men that shave their faces on a daily basis.  By adding a moisturizer into the routine, men can ease dryness and irritation that is often associated with shaving. A moisturizer containing SPF is even better if you can manage, as it will protect your face throughout the day while helping in the anti-aging process, as well as in helping to prevent sun damage.

An exfoliating scrub:

Shaving is already exfoliating, but additionally you should exfoliate everywhere else once a week. Exfoliating scrubs will help to eliminate dead skin and dirt, which will unclog pores and prevent breakouts.

Retinol and eye cream:

Retinol contains Vitamin A, which is incredibly necessary when it comes to aging gracefully, George Clooney style.  However, Retinol can be very drying, (it started out as a means to treat acne) so be wary if your skin starts to flake.  Eye cream will assist with dark circles, the appearance of crow’s feet and overall puffiness in the eye area.

Get A Leg Up With Lasers

Laser and light-based treatments have become increasingly more popular over the years as a solution to many different aesthetic goals. Laser therapy beams highly concentrated light into the desired area of treatment or problem area in order to eliminate fine lines, wrinkles, skin pigmentation and even hair! Not only can laser treatments be quick and effective, but they also require little to no downtime and are performed non-invasively.  The Spa at The SHAW Center offers a variety of different laser treatment options depending on what you’re choosing to eliminate.

Laser Skin Resurfacing
Laser Skin Resurfacing, or a PicoFacial, helps to eliminate wrinkles, as well as restores your skin to a more youthful state. Laser resurfacing can rejuvenate your skin by removing the outermost layers, as well as firming the underlying collagen. All in all, it can help to target age spots, sun damage, scarring and fine lines.

Laser Hair Removal
Say goodbye to the annoying task of having to shave regularly with laser hair removal at The SHAW Center. Unwanted body hair is never okay, and that’s why we offer a solution to rid your physique of it and render you stubble-free.  Our lasers aim a concentrated beam of light at the area of hair, and by doing so the hair follicle absorbs the light, damaging the follicle enough to stop growth.

Laser Tattoo Removal
The Spa at The SHAW Center also offers the gold standard in laser tattoo removal with the PicoSure laser.  This revolutionary system can erase or change tattoos and pigments with greater clearance and 50% fewer treatments than any other tattoo removal laser. The PicoSure laser also targets difficult ink colors, such as blues and greens.

Give Adult Acne The Boot

Let’s face it. There’s nothing more frustrating than unpredictable breakouts and adult acne. Not only do adult women have to worry about fending off wrinkles, but battling zits can also be another annoying day-to-day battle. Certain factors, such as stress, hormones and diet can all attribute to acne resurfacing. However, there are ways to combat this and return your complexion back to a relatively clear state.

Bye, Bye Blemishes
Part of adult acne’s game is the unwanted blemishes they can leave behind. Scarring is not uncommon post breakout, especially when you exacerbate the problem by picking.  However, chemical peels can help to rid your skin of hyperpigmentation and acne. Our spa offers a variety of different chemical peels, such as customized ones from Skin Media, as well as a PCA peel.
The Spa at The SHAW Center also offers FotoFacials, or PicoFacials, which employ an intense pulsed light in combination with radio frequency to effectively treat irregular skin pigmentation and discoloring.

You Are What You Eat
Diet can be a huge contributing factor to adult breakouts. It’s important to be starch conscious by avoiding high-glycemic-index carbohydrates, such as white bread and sugar-laden foods. It’s smart to balance your diet by incorporating whole grains and veggies into your diet that won’t aggravate acne.

Master Your Make-Up
Makeup is intended to mask skin issues, but when used incorrectly it can actually enhance the underlying problem. Opt for a matte or oil-free concealer, so as not to draw attention to your already shiny skin. Remember that light shades magnify and dark ones recede, so never put too much light concealer or highlighter onto raised bumps. Also, always remember to remove your makeup before you call it a night or head to the gym.

Save Your Skin This Summer Season

As Summer quickly approaches, our skin can begin to suffer some serious side effects from the Arizona sun. It's more necessary than ever to protect our complexions from the harsh rays that can eventually lead to sun spots, overall sun damage to our skin, and even worse... skin cancer. It's essential to take preventative measures in our day-to-day routines, and we can do so by adopting even the smallest of changes into our beauty regime, such as wearing makeup that employs an SPF or applying sunscreen daily.  Below are some more ways you can protect your skin from the Summer sun this go around!

Cover Up
One of the more obvious ways to guard your complexion from intense sun damage is to simply cover up.  The sun’s rays are most aggressive between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., so staying indoors between these hours is recommended. However, we understand that this is not always realistic, so throwing on a floppy hat or wearing woven materials and dark fabrics can actually help to protect you during this time as well.

Spoil Your Skin
Make sure to spread on the SPF generously these next few months and that you’re using an SPF 15 or higher. There are quite a few skincare products that The Spa at The SHAW Center carries as well that can work as armor against the sun. Revision Skincare's Intellishade, which we sell at our Spa, works as a tinted anti-aging moisturizer and also employs UVA and UVB protection.  The Oclipse Sunscreen + Primer SPF 30 is another amazing product by ZO Skin Health, which is a line we also know and trust here at The SHAW Center.

Remember It All
So often we forget to protect sensitive spots, such as our hairlines, chests, noses and hands. The Skin Cancer Foundation reports that 80 percent of skin cancers occur on our necks, hands and heads. Remind yourself to be weary of the areas we wouldn’t necessarily think of first, and always, always use sunscreen on these spots!

Prep Smart For Your Next Injection

Fillers have become increasingly popular as an option to either enhance your features, such as lips, or eliminate fine lines and wrinkles. Juvederm, Restylane and Radiesse are all hyaluronic acid fillers available at The Spa at The SHAW Center. They provide instant results and can effectively help you to achieve your aesthetic goals with little to no downtime. Preparing for injections can be just as important as the actual procedure, and these suggestions will allow you an even more seamless service.

Plan Accordingly
Make sure you properly hydrate since hyaluronic acid binds to water. The more hydrated you are, the better you will look overall.
Avoid taking ibuprofen or aspirin before the procedure and up to 36 hours after.
If you work out on a regular basis, you may want to make sure you do so beforehand. It’s not uncommon for additional swelling to occur as a result of strenuous physical activity. Typically 24 hours is an ideal waiting period before engaging in exercise again.

Give Bruising The Boot
Bromelain is an enzyme found in pineapple juice that can be used for medicinal purposes. It is most commonly used as an anti-inflammatory, as it helps to reduce swelling after surgery or an injury.
The flower of arnica is also used as a medicine to help reduce pain and swelling associated with bruises and aches.  This supplement will quickly become your new BFF when used both before and after your injections.
Adding leafy greens to your diet have also been known to reduce the possibility of bruising, as they are rich in Vitamin K.

FemTouch: Your Answers to Vaginal Rejuvenation

Aging is inevitable, and with that comes milestones, such as childbirth and menopause. Both natural and anticipated processes, but your body doesn’t need to suffer as a result of this. Many women will begin noticing symptoms related to their vaginal health than can affect their lifestyle negatively, such as dryness, pain or laxity during sexual intercourse or vaginal atrophy.  Developed by Lumenis, a global leader in aesthetic, surgical and gynecology lasers, FemTouch is a fast and comfortable procedure that can correct these discomforts and physical changes.

How Does It Work?
FemTouch can correct vaginal health related conditions through promoting the remodeling of the vaginal mucous epithelium layer. This fractional CO2 laser works along the vaginal wall releasing laser beams along the entire vaginal wall, which results in gently controlled coagulation of the vaginal lining.

FemTouch works extremely fast and quickly, only taking a couple of minutes for the whole procedure. It’s incredibly efficient, requiring only 2-4 treatments for optimal outcomes. Not only is it non-surgical, but also requires no anesthesia or post-procedure care.

The Spa at The SHAW Center now offers FemTouch as one of our many procedures. For more questions regarding FemTouch, call our office at (480)767-1900.

Valentine's Day Beauty Product Crushes

It’s the season of love with Valentine’s Day upon us. Feeling your best and most beautiful is not simply limited to date night, but it definitely gives us an excuse to get dolled up. Primp and prep with these products and fall in love with yourself all over again!
There’s something to be said for a full, flirty set of lashes. It’s one of the most feminine qualities in a woman and knowing how to enhance this weapon can be easily achieved through the use of one of our favorite beauty products, Latisse. Latissse helps to grow longer, thicker and darker lashes almost overnight!
Juvedermis another one of our favorites, as this injectable gel works as a dermal filler to enhance and plump your pout.  Creating more full and symmetrical lips can be easily done through this miracle injectable with minimal discomfort and little to no downtime.
Laughing is one of the greatest forms of therapy, but our faces shouldn’t have to be punished for it. Let’s be honest, no one welcomes crows feet willingly. Botoxis another one of our beauty crushes because of its ability to completely rejuvenate and render our skin young again. Botox can help to rid those unwanted wrinkles around your eyes, so that you can laugh and smile again confidently.
The SHAW Center is crushing majorly on ZO Skin Health’s Oraser Nourishing Hand Crème because of its ability to restore hydration and smooth your skin completely.  Not only does it help to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, but also it enhances exfoliation to improve rough skin texture. Grab your significant other’s hand, and we bet they won’t want to let go!

Everything You Need to Know About Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning is a simple procedure that works to refresh and revitalize your skin without any pain or downtime. Dermaplaning rids your face of unwanted vellus hair, otherwise known as peach fuzz. It also helps your daily skincare products penetrate easily and into deeper layers of your skin, making them more effective than ever. The SHAW Center’s Spa offers Dermaplaning for those seeking a more flawless complexion without having to endure harsh chemical alternatives.

How It Works
Using light feathering strokes, our aesthetician will carefully exfoliate the top layer of the skin using a specialized surgical blade or scalpel. This removes dead skin cells, peach fuzz and stimulates new skin development along with collagen. All in all, the procedure takes around 30 minutes, it’s completely pain-free and requires no down time. Immediately after the treatment, your skin will look glowy,  more radiant and hydrated.

Dermaplaning is the ideal means of exfoliating the skin because of how mild the actual treatment is. It doesn’t require any chemicals, which makes it great for most skin types, even sensitive skin. Although a surgical blade may sound scary, the treatment feels like you are lightly brushing your skin.   This is the ultimate treatment to offer to patients who are pregnant or nursing and desire a deep exfoliation but aren’t allowed to use peeling agents or chemicals on their skin. Additionally, Dermaplaning is relatively inexpensive compared to other professional exfoliation treatments.

Microdermabrasion Versus Dermaplaning
The SHAW Center offers both Microderm and Dermaplaning to brighten and clear your complexion. Each procedure delivers the same results and is a comfortable way to get a little more out of your usual facial. Microdermabrasion sands and suctions dead skin cells, whereas Dermaplaning is suited for drier skin types because it scrapes off the epidermis layer more gently, without the suction process.
No matter what treatment works best with your skin type, you can expect instant results. Microderm and Dermaplaning both diminish fine lines, fade dark spots and deeply exfoliate skin that’s been subjected to dryness, makeup and environmental factors like sun. Your skin will feel clean, smooth and clear right after the treatment. You will also notice that your foundation goes on smoother, your skin tone is more even and many people report that they break out less frequently and easily.

Achieve More Youthful Looking Eyes

Give your eyes the refreshed look they deserve by alleviating dark circles and giving those bags the boot. We can’t always prevent our body’s natural reaction to our hectic schedules and response to tiredness, but we can at least find ways to help keep it from affecting our appearance.
Many different variables can contribute to the cause of tired eyes, such as seasonal allergies that trigger the release of histamines in the body, which in turn can inflame blood vessels and cause swelling.  Genetics can also have a hand in causing dark circles. If you inherit thin under eye skin it can be more evident when blood accumulates there from slowed circulation. Also, age is a key player in the cause since over time skin naturally loses collagen and thins, which will more prominently expose veins.
Sweet Dreams
You may want to try doubling up on pillows for added support when you sleep to keep blood from building up under your eyes.  When you wake up, try applying a cold compress, such as frozen spoons underneath your eyes for about five minutes to constrict the blood vessels. You can also try using an eye cream with caffeine before calling it a night.
Hide And Go Seek
You can always opt for the temporary method of covering up with makeup. Use a concealer a couple shades lighter than your natural skin tone, and apply a powder the same shade as your skin over top. No need to get crazy with highlighter, just a quick fix.
Collagen Cures
For most of us, having thin skin is the overriding issue and cause of dark circles. Try implementing a collagen-building cream into your beauty regime to help restore your skin. We recommend using one with retinol. Here at The SHAW Center we carry the ZO Skin Health product line, which typically employs this ingredient for anti-aging purposes.
The SHAW Center also offers eyelid surgery, which is a procedure that can create more youthful looking eyes. It removes excess eye skin, muscle or fat deposits to address sagging eyelids or bags beneath the eyes.

Tips For Out-of-town Patients

Most plastic surgery procedures can be performed out of state, and in fact it is not uncommon to explore your options by searching around the country for your preferred physician. Most might find undergoing cosmetic surgery out of town more appealing due to the ability of being able to recover privately and out of the eyes of family and friends.  Confidentiality is key, and the SHAW Center ensures a customized and comfortable recovery period based on your specific needs and wishes.

Simple Steps
The process for out-of-town patients is made as seamless as possible when going through our surgical center. First, have a friend or spouse help you take photos of the areas you’re concerned with, and send them via email at info@theshawcenter.com, which will go directly to Dr. Shaw for review.
Following this you will want to schedule a phone consultation to voice your concerns, hear out Dr. Shaw’s recommendations, as well as discuss recovery plans.
Shortly after, your patient coordinator with help you in scheduling your surgery date along with pre and post-operative appointments.

Travel With A Friend
While maintaining your privacy during recuperation is essential throughout this process, making sure you have your spouse, a close friend or a family member by your side is also extremely important. Depending on the surgery, you may not be able to do everything yourself the first couple of days right after the procedure so having someone to assist you will allow you to fully focus on recovering.

What To Pack
Unless specifically recommended otherwise by Dr. Shaw, typically wearing loose-fitted clothing is recommended after your surgery. No need to pack any muumuus, but relaxed fits and sweatpants are ideal being that they’re extremely easy to get on and off.

Achieve Long, Bold Lashes

Summer is here and our beauty routines should now be as effortless as ever.  They say the eyes are the windows to the soul. Well then, your eyelashes are the curtains and just as essential to perfect. Sure, there’s hundreds of over the counter makeup products, mascaras and even false eyelashes you can settle for when wanting to achieve a bold lash look, but all of those are just temporary and even sometimes detrimental to your natural lashes. What if we told you that you could render your lashes luscious and long without all that and using Latisse and other natural home remedies? Well, you can!
A Healthy Diet
When do you not hear that a healthy diet can benefit you? It’s true! Lashes are made from keratin which is a type of protein, so ensuring your meals are high in protein can actually help your eyelashes to grow fuller and longer.
Vitamin E
This can actually be a DIY solution by combining one tablespoon of sweet almond oil, one tablespoon olive oil and one capsule of liquid vitamin E. Once you have this mixture, you can apply the serum to your lash line with a Q-tip every night before bed. This will also help to make your lashes healthy and strong.
Yes, you can actually groom your eyelashes just as you would comb your hair every day.! We suggest brushing them once a day with an eyelash brush, which will help to distribute the natural oils  through this gentle massage, as well as improve the blood supply.
Above all else, Latisse has been proven to be extremely effective in the growth and renewal of eyelashes.  Full, flirty lashes are one of the most feminine qualities in a woman, so why not obtain long-lasting results with Latisse? This FDA  approved treatment not only improves length and fullness but also the darkness of the lashes. You can apply Latisse directly to the lash line nightly for best results.

This month, when you receive Juvederm at the Shaw Center you will be entered to win a free Latisse!

The Advantages of Dermapen

Skin needling sounds like it would be extremely invasive, right? Well it doesn't have to be! With Dermapen’s advanced technologies, there’s little to no pain when undergoing this treatment. The purpose of Dermapen is to stimulate natural collagen reproduction that will ultimately help to remove any visible signs of wrinkles, enlarged pores and other abnormalities.
Don’t Be Scared Of Scars
This advanced skin needling promotes scar-less healing, while still allowing for increased production of normal woven collagen. This treatment is very similar to fractional laser treatments, but without all the unwanted side effects and downtime. Additionally, Dermapen has actually been found to be more beneficial than chemical peels or microdermabrasion.
Traditional V. Dermapen
Unlike traditional skin needling rollers, Dermapen causes minimal damage to skin and very little discomfort and distress overall. With Dermapen you can also adjust the depth of the needle in order to tailor it to individual needs. It’s because of this that it can also be used in normally hard to reach areas, such as around the eyes, lips and nose.  The Dermapen is also much safer because of its disposable needles, which helps in avoiding the risk of cross-contamination.
It’s Just That Easy
Not only is this treatment virtually painless with almost no downtime, but the results are almost immediate. Typically, you will see results after the first treatment and you will only continue to see more significant results with time. The care process between treatments requires very little, with the suggested use of a topical treatment to aid in hydration and strengthening of the skin.
The Shaw Center recommends the Dermapen for aged and sagging skin, fine lines and wrinkles, vertical lip lines, stretch marks, scars and overall skin rejuvenation.

The Beauty Benefits of Botox

The SHAW Center is dedicated to achieving the most natural looking results and achieves this through a variety of different techniques, one of them being injectable treatments. Both Botox and Dysport will help to eliminate any unwanted lines and render your skin noticeably younger by targeting specific facial expression muscles.  Our center hosts only the most skilled and trained professionals to ensure that these procedures are both personalized to fit your desires and executed flawlessly.
Bottom Line, There Should Be No Lines
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a simple and safe treatment that involves a small injection that blocks the nerve impulse to the muscle under the skin in a certain area. Typically, results can sustain anywhere from three to six months. One of the many benefits of this procedure is that there’s no downtime or serious recovery process. Inject today, show off tomorrow!
While Botox’s most popular benefit is its ability to rid your face of signs of aging, it can also aid in many other areas. Botox has been known to be highly effective in the treatment of migraine headaches. When injected into specific head and neck sites, it can actually prevent a migraine and dull future headache symptoms. Botox is also helpful in balancing the problem of hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating. It relieves this condition by blocking the release of perspiration through the sweat glands.

There’s More…

We are also excited to announce that through the month of May we’re offering $100 off any injectable service for first-time patients. In addition to that, on Wednesday, May 13, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. we will be hosting our Botox Days event where you can spin the wheel and receive savings of 10% off and more on your treatment. You can really flirt with lady luck, and receive your entire treatment free.
While you may have earned worry lines, it doesn’t mean you need to show them anymore!

Speed Up Your Standard Beauty Routine

Let’s set the scene.
It’s 7 a.m., you’ve just hit the snooze button for the second time and you’re lying in bed wondering how much closer you’re getting to leaving the house completely ungroomed for the sake of five extra minutes of sleep.
We get it. Waking up early and still pulling yourself together isn’t so easy, no matter how effortless Jennifer Aniston makes it look in movies.
However, there are some key beauty hacks that will help cut down your routine and allow you to squeeze in some additional beauty sleep. So hit the snooze button one more time. We dare you!
Maintain your mane
Alright, let’s start with that tousled mane of yours. Unless you’ve perfected the art of sleeping like a corpse throughout the entire night, it could probably use a good rinse, lather and repeat.
If you don’t have time for a full shampoo, then cheat. Yes, cheat. It’s called the “bang wash” and it only requires quickly wetting the hairs that frame your face. Pull your hair back into a quick pony, leaving just the front pieces out. Add a small dime size of conditioner and run it through the strands, allowing for the sink water to rinse through it thoroughly. The hair around your face air-dries the quickest, but if you can afford an extra minute or two, just quickly run a blow dryer over the damp hair.
Conceal and highlight
Even if your morning isn’t, these products will brighten up your face almost instantaneously. Use a concealer almost three shades lighter than your natural skin tone, and apply it underneath the eye area. You can even get a little adventurous and add some to the inner creases of your eyes. This will give it the illusion that your eyes are larger, wider and definitely more awake. Always apply a luminescent highlighter to the uppermost cheekbone area of the face. You can also add some to the crease of your top lip line and above your brow as well.  When the highlighted areas of your face catch the light it draws a natural glow, improving the look of your complexion.
Just do it in your sleep
If you don’t have time for your normal remedies in the morning, you can prep throughout the night.
Moisturizing is imperative, and nothing says “Carpe Diem” like hydrated skin. ZO Skin Health, available at The SHAW Center, is a line of skin products that caters to the wellness of your skin.  These ultra-nourishing products will give your skin a healthy and radiant appearance for the morning and also fights against aging.  If all else fails, throw on a red lip. It’s sort of the answer to everything anyway.
The SHAW Center offers a variety of alternative options to looking youthful and rested, without having to deal with all these added extra morning tasks. Whether it’s Juvederm, Sculptra or Latisse, our center ensures every possible option for staying and looking effortlessly beautiful.

Bottom Line: You'll Have No More Lines

Age is beauty, but age also doesn’t have to be defined by wrinkles. Let’s face it they’re inevitable, however, they are most definitely fixable. Parentheses don’t deserve a place on your face, and that’s why The SHAW Center offers a myriad of different solutions to returning your face back to its smooth and even complexion. Juvederm is just one of them!
Juvederm is a smooth injectable gel that renders your skin velvety and creaseless. It consists of a tiny needle that is used to inject a small amount of filler into the skin to “fill” the wrinkles and folds. The best part? It takes all of 15-30 minutes for immediate results to appear! Imagine that. You could have more youthful and younger looking skin in less time than it takes to put on a full face of makeup.
You’re probably also wondering what exactly this injection consists of. Juvederm is comprised of hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring protein that our body automatically produces. The pro to utilizing products that our body already contains is that there is less risk for reaction opposed to unnatural products.
The SHAW Center recommends this procedure especially when dealing with unnecessary nasolabial folds, which are unwanted wrinkles between the corners of your mouth and nose.
Juvederm results can last up to six months or longer but The SHAW Center offers supplemental “touch up” treatments to help maintain optimal and natural-looking results.
In order to find out if Juvederm or any of our other skin rejuvenation procedures are right for you, come visit us to let us further discuss options with you!

Botox Boom Among Men

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, The U.S. has seen a 310% rise in male patients receiving Botox since 2000.  Due to the competitive job market, among other reasons, men are beginning to take a dip into the fountain of youth.  Some are beginning to refer to the trend as “BroTox.”
Alternative procedures such as fillers and lasers have been immensely popular among men.  Men are beginning to realize that laser hair removal works in their favor to cut down time on trimming and grooming.  CoolSculpting helps keep a fit physique that doesn’t require any time off from work or downtime in general.  CoolSculpting helps combat stubborn fat that diet and exercise have a tough time getting rid of.
More and more men are turning to treatments due to their innovation.  The majority of men don’t want to look as if they’ve had any work done.  Most noninvasive procedures at The SHAW Center Spa deliver results that patients are striving for yet don’t make them look “plastic.”
Another sought-after procedure among men is chemical peels due to the numerous results they deliver.  They help repair skin damage caused by years or sun exposure, minimize fine facial lines on your face, remove or decrease lip creases, crows feet and forehead lines, and minimize the appearance of pores among many other benefits.
Whether your favorite beau is seeking CoolSculpting or a chemical peel, help them along and schedule their first appointment or consultation.  Contact The SHAW Center at (480) 767-1900.

ZO Daily Power Defense: This powerful product contains time-released retinol, antioxidants and specialized DNA-repairing enzymes to consistently aid in reducing UV oxidative damage and uneven pigmentation while simultaneously repairing skin function and elasticity.

Alternative Injectables to Botox

When the word injectable is mentioned, the first thought that typically comes to the majority of people is Botox.  Although the FDA approved Botox in 2002, there have been alternative injectables introduced to the market since then.  Dysport was approved by the FDA in 2009 and then Xeomin in 2011.
Like Botox, Xeomin is a “prescription medication used to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines) in adults and contains botulinum toxin type A, a protein purified from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum,” according to www.origin.library.constantcontact.com
Xeomin provides the latest and most innovative research and results accessible in neutrotoxin (Botox).  Initial results from the injectable can be expected within 7 days after treatment.  Full results will typically be noticeable around the first 30 days.  Results from Xeomin can last up to 3 full months, however, they may be remarkably longer or slightly shorter depending on the patient.
Standard facial expressions throughout the day such as squinting or frowning requires the muscles between your eyebrows to contract, resulting in the skin to groove and crease.  As you begin to age, your skin slowly loses its elasticity, which then usually creates frequent frown lines.  Botulinum toxin type A, the main component in Xeomin, work on nerve endings in muscles to combat muscle fibers from shrinking.  This process briefly minimizes the wrinkles on your forehead and other problem areas on your face.
If you’d like to receive additional information about Xeomin or would like to schedule an appointment, contact The SHAW Center at (480) 767-1900.

The Progress of Plastic Surgery

Plastic surgery has dated as far back as 3000 to 2500 BC from findings of treatments to mend a broken nose in the Edwin Smith Papyrus, which is a transcription of an Ancient Egyptian medical text.  Needless to say, advancements in plastic surgery have come a long way since then, let alone the past decade.
Although there are reports of plastic surgery being mentioned in various texts prior, Gaspare Tagliacozzi wrote the first verifiable textbook on plastic surgery, focusing mainly on nasal reconstruction, in the late 16th century.  In 1910, Dr. Vilray Blair published novel methods about skin grafting.  He’s credited for starting a number of university and military training facilities devoted to plastic surgery prior to and post WWI.
The very first reported breast augmentation was carried out in 1895.  The procedure consisted of transferring tissue from the back of the breast in order to repair breast asymmetry.  Beginning in 1899, paraffin, beeswax and vegetable oil were utilized as injectable substances for breast implants.  We’ve come a long way since then considering silicon and saline implants are used in modern day procedures.  In fact, the silicone breast implant was first established in 1962.
Dr. John Davis established the original formal training program and fellowship in plastic surgery in 1924 at John Hopkins.  Davis was also the very first professor of plastic surgery in the US.
Joseph Murray, an American Society of Plastic Surgeons Member Surgeon, performed the first organ transplant, a kidney, in 1954.  The first successful hand transplant was then performed by Warren Breidenbach, an American Society of Plastic Surgeons Member Surgeon, in 1999.
Liposuction was first introduced to the United States from France in 1982.  Since then, body contouring has been in place since 2000 in order to tighten and remove excess skin after a major weight loss.
Since the initial stages of plastic surgery, there has been a magnitude of growth and innovations.  Dr. Shaw utilizes the most cutting edge techniques and equipment for all of his procedures.  If you’re interested in a consultation or would like to schedule an appointment, contact the SHAW Center at (480) 767- 1900.

Explaining Your Procedure to Your Kids

Kids often have a mind of their own and explaining a plastic surgery procedure to them may be difficult or uncomfortable.  Everyone has a different approach to parenting and some would like to explain their procedure to their kids while others would like to keep it a secret.  If you choose to share, here are some ways to approach the conversation.
As many women begin to age, especially those who’ve had children, their body just isn’t what it once was even with diet and exercise.  The majority of moms who opt for a plastic surgery procedure are merely trying to restore what they once had.  Once you decide to have a procedure, the next thought many women have is what they will tell their children.  If you decide to discuss your procedure with your kid(s), one of the essential elements is to keep the conversation age appropriate.  If your child is very young, they may not fully understand all of the elements.  However, since plastic surgery has become drastically popular they may have already been exposed to the subject through the Internet or television depending on their age.  After all, moms know best so determine if an open conversation with more details is best for your child.
Incorporating inner beauty into the conversation with your child is encouraged.  Touch on the fact that you’re having a procedure to restore self-confidence and to enhance your inner beauty.  It’s also a good idea to explain to them that they’re exemplary just the way they are and since you’re having a procedure that doesn’t mean anything is wrong with them.  If you’re having a procedure that relates to pregnancy, explain to them that you don’t have any regrets having children and it was your choice to have children in the first place.  "I think the right approach is to plainly explain that there was something you were unhappy with and you decided to fix it," said Dan Ariely, a three-time New York Times bestselling author and Professor of Psychology and Behavioral Economics at Duke University.
If your children are aware of your procedure and approach you down the road about having plastic surgery themselves and you’re opposed to the idea, you can explain to them that you decided to have your procedure once you fully matured and knew it was the proper decision for you.
Undergoing a procedure is a personal choice and the person undergoing the procedure knows his or her family better than anyone.  Our tips are purely suggestions, so decide what the best approach to the topic would be for you and your family!

Botox Myths Busted

More than one million Botox treatments are now being carried out each year for the first time, according to www.dailymail.co.uk.com.  Although the number of people beginning to receive Botox is skyrocketing, there are still a lot of myths about the popular injection out there.  We’re here to set the bar straight and bust the myths so you know what to expect for your first time or the next time around.
First off, many believe that Botox and fillers are the same thing.  Muscle movement forms wrinkles, which makes Botox the ideal tool to relax the muscle and level out skin.  Fillers are utilized to fill in the skin around the wrinkle.
A “frozen” face is a common correlation with Botox, however this isn’t always the case.  Your results depend on where you decide to go to receive the treatment. Having Botox done from a reputable, board-certified plastic surgeon or dermatologist will ensure a reliable, secure and aesthetically pleasing procedure.
Some may believe that the results of Botox are immediate and last a while.  This all depends on the person but a patient should expect to see full results within about five days.  You can anticipate your results to last approximately 3 to 4 months.
Wrinkles are not the only use for Botox although it’s the most common.  The intention for Botox is to paralyze a certain muscle.  Botox has been endorsed by the FDA for frequent health-related cases to tackle overactive bladders, migraines, and muscle spasms aside from wrinkles.  People automatically presume that Botox is an uncomfortable procedure since needles are involved, however the majority of patients report that the treatment is bearable.  If you’re wary of needles, a local anesthetic cream can be applied to your face an hour before the procedure in order to numb your skin.
Want to save on Botox?  Join us for Botox Days at the SHAW Center Spa on Wednesday, November 12 from 9 AM – 5 PM.  Spin our wheel for savings: 10%, 15%, 20%, 50% off, $100 off, or win FREE Botox!  Space is limited for the event, please call us at (480) 767-1900 to schedule an appointment.  While you’re at it, enjoy 10% off ALL skin care product purchases the day of the event as well.

Variety of Benefits to Vitamin C

Although Vitamin C is commonly used to treat colds, this single most popular vitamin has other numerous health benefits as well.  Lee, one of our fabulous skin experts, shares that one of her favorite beauty secrets is achieving healthy, glowing skin from the power of Vitamin C.
“Vitamin C is an antioxidant that slows the rate of free-radical damage – free radicals are unstable molecules that damage collagen and cause skin dryness, fine lines and wrinkles,” according to www.howstuffworks.com
Vitamin C plays a crucial role in collagen production that not only helps give your skin firmness and strength but also makes it convenient to heal different types of wounds.  When taken orally, Vitamin C aids in faster and better healing for cuts, broken bones, burns, and recovery from surgical procedures.
Applying Vitamin C topically can help shield your skin from free radical damage once exposed to ultraviolet (UV) rays.  It can also reduce sunburn and prevent the outcome of long-term sun exposure, which can develop into skin cancer.  With that said, it’s not safe to apply Vitamin C and then bask in the sun, it mainly ensures that your skin is receiving enough antioxidants and helps keep your skin healthy and soft.
Bodies don’t naturally store Vitamin C and an abundant amount is flushed out through your kidneys, so your supply needs to be replenished every day.  Aside from multivitamins or vitamin C supplements, there are a wide variety of foods that will help get your daily dose such as citrus fruits, bell peppers, cauliflower, broccoli, spinach, and tomatoes.  In order to enhance collagen production and fight free radicals, apply topical vitamin C to your skin.  “Look for a facial cleanser or moisturizer that contains the L-ascorbic acid form of vitamin C to ensure the vitamin penetrates your skin layers,” according to www.howstuffworks.com

In order to temporarily eliminate unwanted hair people used to turn to messy, painful solutions such as waxing, shaving, plucking, electrolysis or chemical depilatories.  Laser hair removal is more beneficial than these alternative treatments and provides permanent results.  The High Speed LightSheer DUET uses state-of-the-art diode lasers with vacuum-assist technology to remove unwanted hair.  The method is more efficient than other treatments due to greater speed and comfort.
The High Speed LightSheer DUET is a laser that creates a bigger beam of extremely concentrated light.  The light released is well absorbed by the pigment within the hair follicles.  Throughout the procedure, the laser pulses for a fraction of a second, enabling the hair to absorb the light and warm up.  As the light warms up, the hair shaft and bulb are damaged which remarkably hinders the hairs potential to re-grow.  Since the light has a large beam, the treatment tackles a copious amount of hair follicles concurrently, creating a much faster alternative to other traditional laser hair removal options.
The LightSheer DUET provides two handpiece options, depending on your needs.  The innovative vacuum assisted technology within the handpiece combined with diode laser light enables quick and comfortable treatment to large areas.  A back or legs can be treated within 15 to 20 minutes sans numbing cream.  It is necessary to have multiple laser hair removal treatments because the laser is ideal when hairs are in an early growth stage and all of the hairs are not in this phase at the same time.

Real Results with RADIESSE + MEN

According to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the number of cosmetic procedures for men has increased by more than 106% between 1997 and 2012.  RADIESSE + MEN is an innovative volumizing filler exclusive to men to aid in plumping the skin and eliminating proof of a well-lived life.
RADIESSE Volumizing Filler is made from an exclusive natural mineral and is injected through a fine needle that is placed under the skin.  It is the only dermal filler accessible that is formulated of calcium-based microspheres and is also clinically proven to stimulate the natural production of collagen.
The filler’s results are immediate and add volume under the skin as well as hide the signs of creases and wrinkles.  As the mineral in the filler begins to break down, the effects of RADIESS Volumizing Filler proceed while your natural collagen is triggered, resulting in additional structure after the primary results have subsided.  The results from the procedure are not only immediate but long-lasting as well, supplying wrinkle release for up to a year or longer in the majority of patients.
This procedure is excellent for eliminating lines and creases that have appeared around the nose and mouth.  Five central areas where RADIASSE Volumizing Filler can help remove wrinkles and folds are the smile lines, corners of the mouth, marionette lines, chin wrinkle and pre-jowl.
If you would like to learn more information about RADIESSE Volumizing Filler or want to schedule an appointment, contact the SHAW Center at (480) 767-1900.

Gushing Over GLAMGLOW

We can’t get enough of one of our newest skincare products, GLAMGLOW Supermud Clearing Treatment!  GLAMGLOW was formerly intended for exclusive professional backstage use in Hollywood, however, their products were released to consumers in 2011 and is rapidly becoming one of the most sought after brands in skincare.  Their products are recognized for providing instant, visible results through their patent-pending formulas containing real pieces of leaf with top of the line technology.
The Supermud Clearing Treatment is intended to help combat typical skin issues such as breakouts, discoloration, black and white heads, razor bumps, and in-grown hair.  The paraben, sulfate, and phthalate free formula is composed of an array of natural ingredients including eucalyptus leaf, peppermint plant, chamomile and Aloe Vera.  The skin-clearing mud pulls out dirt and blockage while a six-acid blend in the formula significantly illuminates and alleviates skin.  The extraordinary combination draws out dirt and pores with Activated-X Charcoal, resulting in velvety and wholesome looking skin.
One of the innovative technologies that the Supermud Clearing Treatment contains is PORE-MATRIX.  “Our Activated-X Charcoal is an Xtreme absorption carbon, attracting toxic substances into its mass up to 500 times its volume from all skin types, within the deepest & toughest areas.  Our new proprietary K17-Clay will better extract & encapsulate excess sebum oils, bacteria & toxins in a controlled stasis state, revealing a Pore-Matrix of extraction dots & areas, ready to be washed away for seemingly poreless skin,” according to www.glamglowmud.com
In order to use the treatment, apply a thin layer to your skin.  Once the product is applied, you can leave it on for 5, 10, 15 or 20 minutes.  The Pore-Matrix will then release specks of extraction.  Simply wash off the treatment with water and use as frequently as you need.  If you have questions about GLAMGLOW or are interested in purchasing, contact the SHAW Center at (480) 767-1900.

The Process of a Procedure

All procedures provided at the Shaw Center are performed in a customized, professional and innovative office environment.  There are a few steps that a patient experiences in order to receive a procedure.  These steps include a consultation, pre-surgical preparation, surgery and post-surgical care that are all provided in a skillful and attentive manner.
Prior to any cosmetic procedure a consultation with Dr. Shaw is done for a small fee, all spa consultations are complimentary.  Consultations give patients sufficient time with Dr. Shaw and his staff for an in-depth evaluation based on the patient’s concerns.  Understanding the patient’s goals, determining what is best for the patient, and educating the patient about the procedure and recovery are the primary focal points of the consultation.  Any and all questions the patient has will be thoroughly answered throughout the consultation as well.
A preoperative preparation presents in-depth tailored instruction, photography and a detailed discussion with Dr. Shaw and the staff.  All procedures aside from treatments in the spa are performed in Hospital based and fully accredited Outpatient Ambulatory Surgical Facilities.  The majority of the procedures are done using general anesthesia.  In order to strengthen safety and reduce risk, a board-certified anesthesiologist administers the anesthesia and monitors you during the procedure.
All post surgical care is fulfilled through an outpatient bases or inpatient at the Piper Ambulatory Surgery Center.  Our staff will contact you in person or by phone and are available for any issues, questions or concerns 24/7.
If you are unable to make an appointment, please contact us with at least 24 hours advanced notice in order for us to give your appointment to another patient if possible.  The Shaw Center accepts the following forms of payment: Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Cashier’s check, money order or personal check.  We also accept patient financing through Care Credit.
If you are interested in scheduling a consultation or would like more information, call the Shaw Center at (480) 767-1900.

Popular Procedures for Men

The amount of men opting for plastic surgery has been on the rise with a reported 204,032 male procedures performed in 2013, according to The American Society of Plastic Surgeons.  Although many women undergo changes within their bodies due to pregnancy and hormones, the majority of men experience stress that can affect their appearance and health.
The most popular procedures for men in 2013 were nose reshaping (rhinoplasty), eyelid lift (blepharoplasty), liposuction, breast reduction (gynecomastia), and a facelift (rhytidectomy).  Common noninvasive procedures were Botox injections, laser hair removal, microdermabrasion, soft tissue fillers and cellulite treatment.
Undergoing a rhinoplasty helps transform the appearance of the nose to be more proportional to the rest of the face.  Lack of sleep tends to result in saggy, droopy eyes.  An eyelid lift removes the excess skin and tissue on the upper and lower eyelids to restore a youthful, rested appearance.
If you’re unable to lose stubborn fat through diet and exercise, liposuction is a great option.  The procedure sculpts the body by removing undesirable fat from areas such as the abdomen, waist, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, chin and upper arms.  Liposuction can also be performed on the neck and is ideal for patients who have a fuller face by creating a slimmer, younger look.  The Shaw Center also offers CoolSculpting, a non-invasive substitute to liposuction that freezes away fat deposits on the stomach, love handles, back, arms and legs.
Botox is a great solution for men who are trying to avoid wrinkles but aren’t ready to go under the knife.  The chemicals in the injection paralyze specific muscles that are directly responsible for wrinkles in the forehead, between your eyebrows, crows feet, and horizontal necklines.  Botox can also be used to treat uncontrolled sweating in palms, soles of the feet and the armpits.
Many men have turned to laser hair removal to effectively get rid of unwanted or an excess of hair on their face, back or chest.  The procedure is straightforward and removes the hair from the follicle without harming the skin.
If you are interested in a procedure, contact the Shaw Center for a consultation at (480) 767-1900.

How Far is Too Far?

Today there seems to be more pressure to keep up your appearance, look younger and stay in shape.  According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 1.6 million invasive surgeries were performed in the U.S. in 2012.  Although plastic surgery is becoming more of a norm, just how far is too far?
We’re sure you’ve all witnessed someone, whether it be first hand or in the media, that has either had too many procedures or went over board with a procedure.  Heidi Montag, reality star, underwent a series of ten surgeries in one day in 2010 that drastically altered her appearance.  She received a mini brow lift, a nose job, neck liposuction, and a breast augmentation among others.  Montag has remorse for a few of the decisions she made stating, “I definitely regret some of the surgeries that I have had over the years, I think I was so young and in such an unstable situation in my life with so much going on and so much pressure.”
Regardless of how your attitude about your cosmetic procedure comes off to your surgeon, each patient contemplating surgery must endure a certain level of screening prior to a procedure.  Although the extent of the screening differs from case to case, the majority of doctors take that facet of the process more seriously.
Even though there aren’t written instructions for how doctors should handle patient’s mental health, forming a relationship with a patient, asking questions and delving into the patient’s history helps give the doctor a sense of whether or not a patient is having a procedure for the correct reasons.  If the doctor gets the sense that the patient is conflicted or having the procedure for the wrong reasons, usually the patient will be referred to a counselor.
When it comes time for you to decide whether or not to have a procedure, it’s crucial that this is something for yourself and you do not have ulterior motives such as pleasing a significant other.  Undergoing cosmetic surgery is a great way to boost self-esteem and be comfortable in your own skin but just remember sometimes less is more!

Sultry, Smooth Legs!

It’s beginning to heat up in Arizona and you will start showing more skin before you know it!  Use these last couple of winter weeks to fully prepare your skin for the sun.  We have a few ways that will guarantee sexy, smooth legs and have everyone asking what your secret is.
The Spa at the Shaw Center offers a few methods of laser hair removal such as the LightSheer Duet, Alma Laser hair removal and Syneron Elos.  These treatments do not require any downtime, can be used anywhere on the body and do not use any messy gels.  Regardless of which laser hair removal you opt to use, we suggest a few sessions depending on your hair so it is best to begin your treatment now to prepare for the summer.
If you decide to stick with traditional shaving, we have a few tips to receive optimal results.  Prior to shaving, exfoliate and then apply baby oil to your legs to soften your skin and the hair.  Utilize a men’s razor and men’s moisturizing shaving cream because they are extra gentle on your skin since they are meant for faces.  Apply rubbing alcohol on your legs after shaving to close your pores and kill bacteria.  Then put on an unscented deodorant in order to avoid razor bumps and chafing.
When you have razor burn, dab apple cider vinegar straight on your skin allowing it to absorb.  Wash the area after 10 minutes.  Apple cider vinegar is utilized to terminate skin bacteria and yeast infections.
If you are interested in laser hair removal, contact the Shaw Center at (480) 767-1900 for more information!

How to Prep For Plastic Surgery

Once your appointment is booked for your procedure, it is important to properly prepare not only for your actual surgery but for your recovery time as well.  Before booking your surgery it is crucial that you are fully satisfied with your decision in order to avoid apprehension and nervousness.  We have a few suggestions to make sure you are organized for a speedy recovery!
Prior to your procedure, Dr. Shaw will give you brochures and information regarding your procedure and what to expect.  Read up on as much as you can and don’t be afraid to ask him any questions you may have to better prepare yourself.  It is best to have someone close to you be there for support once you initially come out of surgery and plan on taking you home.  If they can be around you for a few days following the procedure in order to help take care of you, even better!
Properly prepare your home for your return from surgery.  Make sure you stock up on healthy food, plenty of pillows, magazines, movies and essential ice packs.  You can fill your prescription for any medication you may need beforehand so it is readily available once you are back at home.
It is very common to feel some doubts the night before surgery, which is normal.  Lack of sleep and high blood pressure may come as a result; try some deep breathing or meditation techniques in order to calm yourself down or watch a funny movie to help relax.  Once you are back at home, take it easy, soon enough you will be able to enjoy the benefits of your procedure!

Latisse vs. Other Long Lash Solutions

Fuller, thicker eyelashes can help enhance a woman’s appearance and is becoming a sought after look.  Although there are positive beauty benefits to popular products on the market such as eyelash extensions and false eyelashes, these types of cosmetics can have harmful affects on your eyes.  Latisse is a great alternative to the common products and is the first and only eyelash treatment that has been approved and proven effective by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Utilizing products such as false eyelashes and eyelashes extensions can cause various issues such as allergic reactions and ailments.  “False eyelashes can trap dirt and bacteria, creating irritation and infection.  And they can be difficult to remove.  The risks of eyelash extensions are not only an allergic reaction to the glue but erosion of the inner surface of the eyelids.  And they can cause permanent damage to your natural lashes,” according to Consumer Reports’ medical adviser Dr. Orly Avitzur.
Having eyelash extensions for a long period of time can eventually harm your natural eyelashes, potentially developing traction alopecia, a kind of hair loss if there is too much follicle pressure on your actual eyelash.  In cases where a woman already has weak hair follicles prior to eyelash extensions, the damage could be permanent and cause irreparable hair loss.
Latisse is applied to your actual lashes to help produce longer, fuller, darker lashes.  The growth process of Latisse is gradual and the majority of patients see notable enhancements within 2 months of use.  Once you stop using the product, your eyelashes will return to their normal appearance over several weeks to months.  The Shaw Center carries Latisse, however, it is only available by prescription.  Call us today for any questions and information regarding the product at (480) 767-1900.

New Year, New You!

With the New Year right around the corner, it’s time to start thinking of your resolutions and ways you wish to improve.  Have you always considered plastic surgery?  You’re not the only one!  According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 14.6 million cosmetic plastic surgery procedures were performed in the U.S. last year.  We have compiled a list of great reason on why you should contemplate going under the knife or having cosmetic procedures.
Reconstructive surgery is a great option for those that have insecurities due to scarring or defects.  Accidents can cause disfiguration or scarring that reconstructive surgery can help reduce and eliminate.  Birth defects like cleft lips and ear deformities can be repaired to a standard image through a sequence of surgeries as the person grows.  The majority of women who have undergone a mastectomy turn to reconstructive surgery in order to relieve psychological pain.
For those that have undergone a major weight loss, plastic surgery is a great alternative to remove excess skin that you are unable to lose.  One of the most common reasons to get plastic surgery is for your own self-esteem and image.  If you have certain insecurities, plastic surgery will help boost your self-confidence and make you feel better about yourself!
If you are not ready to commit to plastic surgery, there are many non-invasive treatments, procedures and products that The Shaw Center offers that still produce noticeable results.  Products like Botox can be used to enhance your appearance and can also be used for medical reasons such as reducing migraines and sweating.
According to Before After Surgery Toolbox, the top ten reasons people give for having plastic surgery are to turn back the hands of time, look like a beauty, not a beast, look smokin’ hot (sometimes like a person one admires), erase mistakes (like scars due to an overzealous sense of immortality), get rid of too much “me,” make more of “me” in the right places, to make my partner happy (wrong reason), to fix what’s broken (reconstructive surgery), to make sex better (because I’ll look and feel sexier), and to be happy with my looks (comfortable in my own skin.)
Whatever your reasoning may be for plastic surgery, schedule a consultation with Dr. Shaw at (480) 767-1900 in order to discuss your options and improve yourself for the New Year.  We wish everyone a very happy New Year!
