The Benefits of a Tummy Tuck
Fri, Sep 9 2016 05:40
Whether you’re seeking a mommy makeover or just overall fed up with the appearance of your stomach despite your best diet and exercise efforts, The SHAW Center has a solution. Abdominoplasty, or most commonly referred to as a “tummy tuck,” can resolve even the most stubborn fat deposits. Not only can a tummy tuck enhance the appearance of your midriff, but also provide additional benefits, such as the ones outlined below.
Reduces Stress and Urinary Incontinuence
Vaginal birth can sometimes cause bladder control issues, or incontinuence, which can then lead to leakage through sneezing, coughing exercising and in some cases, laughing.
Improves Posture and Abdominal Tone
While dieting and exercising can aid in physical appearance, some women who’ve lost a significant amount of weight or who have had multiple pregnancies can experience their stomach muscles becoming swollen. Improved posture and support can help in relieving back pain.
Ventral Hernia Correction
At times having a weak abdominal can cause hernias to form. Excessive weight loss can tend to cause abdominal weakness, but a tummy tuck can help to correct this.
Aside from the obvious benefit of a tummy tuck in helping to improve the appearance of your stomach, undergoing this procedure can also result in a multitude of other advantages as well.
Save Your Skin This Summer Season
Wed, Jun 1 2016 05:53
| Aesthetics, Body
As Summer quickly approaches, our skin can begin to suffer some serious side effects from the Arizona sun. It's more necessary than ever to protect our complexions from the harsh rays that can eventually lead to sun spots, overall sun damage to our skin, and even worse... skin cancer. It's essential to take preventative measures in our day-to-day routines, and we can do so by adopting even the smallest of changes into our beauty regime, such as wearing makeup that employs an SPF or applying sunscreen daily. Below are some more ways you can protect your skin from the Summer sun this go around!
One of the more obvious ways to guard your complexion from intense sun damage is to simply cover up. The sun’s rays are most aggressive between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., so staying indoors between these hours is recommended. However, we understand that this is not always realistic, so throwing on a floppy hat or wearing woven materials and dark fabrics can actually help to protect you during this time as well.
Spoil Your Skin
Make sure to spread on the SPF generously these next few months and that you’re using an SPF 15 or higher. There are quite a few skincare products that The Spa at The SHAW Center carries as well that can work as armor against the sun. Revision Skincare's Intellishade, which we sell at our Spa, works as a tinted anti-aging moisturizer and also employs UVA and UVB protection. The Oclipse Sunscreen + Primer SPF 30 is another amazing product by ZO Skin Health, which is a line we also know and trust here at The SHAW Center.
Remember It All
So often we forget to protect sensitive spots, such as our hairlines, chests, noses and hands. The Skin Cancer Foundation reports that 80 percent of skin cancers occur on our necks, hands and heads. Remind yourself to be weary of the areas we wouldn’t necessarily think of first, and always, always use sunscreen on these spots!
SculpSure v. CoolSculpting
Fri, May 13 2016 05:17
| Body, The Spa
The Spa at The SHAW Center offers both CoolSculpting and now SculpSure. With two CoolSculpting machines (DualSculpting) and the SculpSure, which has four separate panels, we can now treat as many as 6 areas in just on hour! These non-surgical liposuction treatments are a total game changer and help to target fat in even the most stubborn areas. While these two fat reduction alternatives are both extremely effective, it is important to know the difference between the two.
CoolSculpting takes one hour or more per applicator, often requiring four hours to treat the entire adbodem, while SculpSure takes only 25 minutes for up to four applicators.
Both procedures are virtually painless. SculpSure utilizes a flat non-suction applicator with a cooling plate that is easily tolerated. CoolSculpting uses suction based applicators and the post procedure massage can be quite uncomfortable.
The desired results from both of these procedures can be quite fulfilling. However, they both produce different timelines for when one might see these results. SculpSure can reduce up to 25% of fat pockets and usually takes anywhere from 6 weeks to 3 months for optimal results. CoolSculpting will show signs of permanent fat reduction of around 22% in 2-4 months.
CoolSculpting’s treatable areas are limited based on the applicator design, whereas SculpSure can target the abdomen and love handles, as well as a multitude of other areas, such as under the chin, arms and thighs because of the applicator’s flexibility.
If you haven't already signed up for The Spa at The SHAW Center's SculpSure event this Tuesday, May 17th from 5 to 7 pm, call our office at (480)767-1900 to see if we still have a spot for you! We will have a real life SculpSure demo, complimentary consults, special event pricing, giveaways, as well as beverages and bites. You won't want to miss out!

Aging is inevitable, and with that comes milestones, such as childbirth and menopause. Both natural and anticipated processes, but your body doesn’t need to suffer as a result of this. Developed by Lumenis, a global leader in aesthetic, surgical and gynecology lasers, FemTouch is a fast and comfortable procedure that can correct these discomforts and physical changes.
How Does It Work?
FemTouch can correct vaginal health related conditions through promoting the remodeling of the vaginal mucous epithelium layer. FemTouch works extremely fast and quickly, only taking a couple of minutes for the whole procedure. It’s incredibly efficient, requiring only 2-4 treatments for optimal outcomes. Not only is it non-surgical, but also requires no anesthesia or post-procedure care.
The Spa at The SHAW Center now offers FemTouch as one of our many procedures. For more questions regarding FemTouch, call our office at (480)767-1900.

Recently, plastic surgery has been on the rise. 15.6 million people in the United States had a cosmetic procedure in 2014, a 3% increase from 2013 and a dramatic 104% increase from 2000.
With a surge in procedures, plastic surgery has become more widely accepted and has also opened the door for new non-invasive procedures. Instead of boring holiday gift staples like socks or a scarf, here’s our guide to skin and body services for everyone on your list. For the clean freak: Clarisonic. This facial cleansing tool has become a household name and makes a great gift for those who are skincare obsessed or like things a little more squeaky clean than the rest of us. Not only does it purify pores on the daily, it also helps even skin texture and fight off fine lines. For the poolside enthusiast: Sculpsure. In Arizona, pool season gets here early. Give the gift of a bikini-ready bod with brand new Sculpsure. The revolutionary laser reduces fat permanently with less treatments and zero downtime. For the extra scruffy guy: Laser Hair Removal. Although it might not be a daily topic of conversation, no one likes unsightly hair (ew!). Help out with a package of laser hair removal session to get him ready for beach vacays and whatever else comes along in 2016. For the celeb-obsessed: Lip Augmentation. 2015 was the year of the Kylie Jenner lip and women everywhere are jumping on the bandwagon to achieve volume-packed lips like the teen social media queen. Pump up your gift game this year with injectable fillers that not only increase pout size, but also smooth lips and rejuvenate the entire mouth area. For the selfie pro: Smart Lipo Neck. This profile-perfecting procedure uses a laser to melt fat and tighten skin. With almost no scarring (the incision is only one millimeter), downtime is minimal. Grab a selfie stick and make it a packaged gift.
Celebrate Father's Day With CoolSculpting
Fri, Jun 19 2015 03:42
Celebrate your Dad this Father’s Day by treating him to one of the “cool”est gifts. Cosmetic surgery isn’t just for women, and CoolSculpting works just as effectively on men as it does on women. We’ve all been witness to the latest “Dad Bod” craze, and we’re not saying that it’s something the men in your life shouldn’t embrace, but a little fast-fix toning never hurt either.
It’s body contouring without having to undergo a surgical procedure. CoolSculpting employs Cryolipolysis, which is a patented method that uses carefully controlled cooling to reduce fat. Once the cells are treated, they are gradually eliminated through your body’s own metabolic processes, reducing the thickness of the fat layer. If you’ve already improved your figure through dieting and exercise, and the pockets of fat you want to target are smaller, then CoolSculpting is the ideal solution for you.
This noninvasive procedure is best suited for the waist, upper/lower abdomen and inner thighs. We know how busy Dads can be with work and everything else going on in their lives, but with CoolSculpting there’s relatively no downtime so he wouldn’t have to worry about taking time off.
The Shaw Center has been a Certified CoolSculpting Center since 2011, and not only that but with 25 total years of general body contouring experience means sound advice on the best option to reach your aesthetic goals.
This CoolSculpting Father’s Day Special will give you half off the second area when you buy the first one for Pops. This offer is only valid for men and expires June 30, 2015 with the procedure needing to be scheduled before the following September. This still gives Dad plenty of time to make his consultation in order to assess what parts of his “Dad Bod” could be made better.
Sure, you can really shock Dad this year by gifting him with the usual new tie, but why not give him something that will truly make him happy even when he’s not dressed in a suit? After all, he’s probably earned it.
Call The Shaw Center at 480-767-1900 to learn more about this special offer!
Suit Up: Finding The Right Swimwear For Your Body Type
Thu, Apr 9 2015 10:38
| Beauty, Body
Summer is quickly approaching, which means peeking in that dreaded swimsuit drawer to see what you have to work with for the coming months. However, trying on swimsuits shouldn’t be a negative experience if you know what looks best on your figure. Everyone has a different body type and therefore should capitalize on your unique physique! Feeling sexy poolside just became a whole lot easier. Now, let’s talk fruit!
J-Lo and Beyoncé adhere to this body shape when they’re trying on their beachwear! The key to figuring out which style suits you best is making sure that you’re able to balance your proportions, while ensuring your bottom half has the coverage it needs. Opt for a plunging neckline or a patterned or colorful top that shifts the eye upward, focusing less on your lower half. If possible, veto any thick-banded bottoms that will just call attention to the area you’re trying to avoid showcasing. A shear sarong draped at your hips will not only add to the look, but also flatter your figure.
If you’re an apple shape, then you carry most of your weight in your mid-section. Detracting from this area of your body is an easy fix with the right approach. Shirred or gathered fabric helps to eliminate any unwanted clinging to your hips or stomach, while also creating definition in the waist. Luckily for you, high-waisted bottoms are extremely in trend right now and make for the perfect solution to concealing that lower pooch. Whether it’s a retro-inspired swimsuit bottom or pair of high-waisted denim shorts, you’ll instantly feel more confident!
Katy Perry and Brooklyn Decker are examples of women with a bigger bust, and they most definitely rock it. It’s all about finding a way to balance your figure without completely ignoring your womanly assets. Support is crucial with this body type and finding a bikini top with an under wire or molded cups will ensure that your girls stay lifted. You will want to avoid overly embellished tops or ruffles since this will only draw more attention to your chest, taking away from the rest of your gorgeous figure.
Alright, this is for all the Cameron Diaz’s out there. This figure is a bit more narrow and straight up and down. Fortunately, creating curves is much easier than hiding them. You have permission to play around with more embellishments and patterns on both the top and bottom. This will create the illusion of dimension. One-piece suits with strategic cutouts are great for creating curves, as well as tie-side bikini bottoms. Less is more with this body type!
The SHAW Center offers a variety of different procedures than can assist in perfecting the swimsuit-ready body you desire. Embrace your figure, but know that there’s always potential to love it even more!
Put Your Fat To Use
Fri, Jan 9 2015 03:48
Instead of fighting your fat, learn to love it with a fat transfer. A fat transfer procedure is exactly what it sounds like; moving excess fat from an area of the body like the outer thighs to areas that are deficient in mass such as parts of the face, breasts, hands and buttocks. Fat transferring techniques continue to become more innovative, creating consistent, reliable results.
As people begin to age, particular areas of our body start to lose fat and/or sag. A fat transfer is an ideal procedure to enhance these areas that lack from aging. Speaking of aging, the collection of stem cells and growth factors from the fat cells will also find its place in the rejuvenation process.
Some reasons to consider a fat transfer is if you have areas on your face that are visibly creased or sunken, if you’re seeking a more permanent situation opposed to fillers and to replenish contour asymmetry of the breasts or mask clear indications of breast implants, among other motives.
For the procedure, fat is initially harvested in one area of your body and sterilized, then reinserted with particular needles into the area(s) that need enhancement. The only risk for scarring is from liposuction, which is performed when removing excess fat from the contributing area. Scarring, if any, would be small and in a hidden area.
If you’re interested in more information or would like to schedule a consultation for a fat transfer, contact The SHAW Center at (480) 767-1900.
DualSculpting: Less Time, More Results
Fri, Oct 10 2014 04:16
Some procedures that we offer in the SHAW Center Spa require multiple treatments in order to receive optimum results, such as CoolSculpting and CoolSmooth. Both of these procedures freeze fat in order to reduce flab and create an enhanced body contour. They're a great non-surgical alternative to liposuction. CoolSculpting is utilized on the waist, upper/lower abdomen and inner thighs. CoolSmooth on the other hand tackles “non-pinchable,” stubborn fat on the thighs and upper abdomen.
Since CoolSmooth and CoolSculpting freeze fat on areas such as love handles and thighs, that means the machine has to work on one side then the other, creating a longer procedure- until now. DualSculpting is an innovative solution that allows you to freeze your fat in half the time. This process allows two CoolSculpting machines to work their magic on you concurrently, resulting in areas such as love handles to be treated in one hour opposed to two.
Excellent candidates for CoolSculpting are those that have pinchable fat, healthy skin, unwanted fat that withstands diet and exercise among others. The SHAW Center is the only Certified CoolSculpting Center in North Scottsdale and one of only two centers backed by a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon.
If you’re considering CoolSculpting or CoolSmooth, contact the SHAW Center at (480) 767-1900 for more information or to schedule an appointment.
Workouts for Different Body Types
Fri, Sep 19 2014 03:20
| Body, Fitness, Health
Not everyone’s body type is the same so why should your workouts be? It’s necessary for certain body types to target different muscles in order to receive the best results for your body. In honor of National Women’s Health and Fitness Day on September 24, we’ve broken down the best workouts for different body types.
Pear Shaped: Those of you that have a wider bottom than top can reap the benefits of this workout by toning your arms and shoulders as well as strengthening the rest of your body. Try out the “Hundred on the Ball” from Women’s Health. Lie on your back and place your arms by your sides. Bend your knees at 90 degrees and place your calves on top of a fitness ball. Lift your head and shoulders off the ground but ensure that your head, neck and shoulders are relaxed. Breathe in and out 5 times and then rest your head. Repeat 10 times for 1 rep. While your head is off the ground, pulse your arms up and down with your palms facing down. Repeat this for 10 reps with 100 breaths per rep.
Athletic: If you have broad shoulders and a slender waist, try this alternative take to squats in order to strengthen your tummy and enhance your booty and thighs. Start with your feet hip-width apart and place your arms in front of you. Bend your knees so your body sits at a 45 to 90 degree angle ensuring that your knees are not over your toes. As you return to a standing position, rotate your torso to the right along with your arms. Bring your arms to the center for another squat and as you come up rotate to the left. This is considered one rep; it’s recommended to do 10 to 12. If you are seeking more of a challenge, do the same exercise while holding a medicine ball.
Curvy: Women with a bust and hips that are larger than their waist are considered curvy and tend to lack overall muscle tone. Utilize this workout to build muscle and tone arms and legs. Begin in a side plank on your right side with your elbow on the floor right under your shoulder. Place your right foot in front of your left. Extend your left arm above your head so your bicep is directly above your ear with your palm facing the floor. Point your arm towards the floor while simultaneously raising your hips. Repeat this movement on your right side for 8 to 10 reps and then switch and repeat on your left side.
Straight or Boyish Shaped: If you lack any sort of curves, help build a shape to your waist and sculpt your glutes with this workout. Start with your feet hip-width apart. Hold a set of dumbbells at your shoulders, bending your elbows out to the sides with your palms facing forward. Take a large step forward with your right foot into a squatting position so your knees reach a 90-degree angle, make sure your knees don’t over extend and are aligned with your ankle. Straighten your right leg and come to a stand and then bring your left knee forward in front of your hips so you are just standing on your right leg while holding the weights up to the ceiling. Repeat this on your other leg and do 10 to 12 reps per leg.
Save Your Skin From the Sun

| Beauty, Body, Health
Research indicates that there are two specific kinds of aging: aging created by genes we inherit (intrinsic) and aging caused due to environmental factors, such as exposure to the sun’s rays (extrinsic). Our patients as well as our staff have been raving about EltaMD Sun Care in order to protect their skin from the brutal sun, especially in Arizona.
Ultraviolet (UV) rays are components of the invisible energy that comes from the sun. UVA (aging) rays account for 95% of our sun exposure. These rays create skin aging and contribute to skin cancer. UVA rays sneak into the skin layers, harming collagen and cells, which leads to wrinkling, hyperpigmentation and loss of elasticity. UVB (burning) rays typically affect the outer layer of the skin.
EltaMD Sun Care products provide a variety of sunscreens that prevent sun damage safely and supply true broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection. All of the products are composed of microfine transparent zinc oxide and are noncomedogenic, sensitivity-free, fragrance-free and paraben-free. The products range from facial and body sunscreens from SPF 30 to 50 and each product is tailored to certain skin types such as those prone to acne, rosacea and hyperpigmentation.
Dermatologists have discovered that the most powerful cosmeceutical that can prevent and reverse the signs of aging is sunscreen. All of the EltaMD Sun Care products can help put a stop to signs of premature aging and protect against sun-related skin diseases when used daily.
Contact the SHAW Center at (480) 767-1900 to find out more about the EltaMD Sun Care products that we carry!

The Best Ways to Bronze
Fri, Jun 6 2014 03:47
| Beauty, Body, Health
Now that summer’s here we’re sure you’ll find yourself exposing more skin than usual and if you can’t tone it, tan it! There are so many bronzing products available now that are much safer than traditional tanning or going to a tanning salon. One of our favorite sunless products is Quick Tan self tanner by Body Drench. Quick Tan helps give you a desired instant summer glow with salon quality sunless tanning at home. The Bronzing Spray has a 360-degree nozzle to ensure simple application and the tinted formulas make it easy to see where to put the product on. Once applied, a natural tan will progress within 3-5 hours. The SHAW Center carries Quick Tan bronzing spray in medium/dark. For the best results, consider the following: · Use on clean, exfoliated skin · Spray evenly over body holding the spray 10” away · Wash hands after application · Let your skin dry before putting on clothes · For a darker tan, use once a day until you attain desired color · To maintain your tan, apply once or twice a week
Another sunless tanning alternative are spray tans. The FDA has backed DHA, the principal component in sunless tanning products, for over 40 years. Although DHA is considered safe, if you are receiving a spray tan avoid spraying your face for various reasons. Since the skin on your face is more sensitive than the rest of your body, spraying your face can clog your pores, which will most likely lead to blemishes and breakouts. DHA is recommended for external use only so you should avoid inhaling the product. If you already have dark spots on your face, spraying your face will make them appear darker. Once your spray tan begins to fade, it may fade unevenly on your face. The best option to make your face tanner is to utilize bronzer. Some of our favorite bronzers are Laguna by NARS and Smashbox Bronze Lights.
If you have additional questions about Quick Tan or would like to purchase, contact the SHAW Center at (480) 767-1900.
The Process of a Procedure
All procedures provided at the Shaw Center are performed in a customized, professional and innovative office environment. There are a few steps that a patient experiences in order to receive a procedure. These steps include a consultation, pre-surgical preparation, surgery and post-surgical care that are all provided in a skillful and attentive manner. Prior to any cosmetic procedure a consultation with Dr. Shaw is done for a small fee, all spa consultations are complimentary. Consultations give patients sufficient time with Dr. Shaw and his staff for an in-depth evaluation based on the patient’s concerns. Understanding the patient’s goals, determining what is best for the patient, and educating the patient about the procedure and recovery are the primary focal points of the consultation. Any and all questions the patient has will be thoroughly answered throughout the consultation as well. A preoperative preparation presents in-depth tailored instruction, photography and a detailed discussion with Dr. Shaw and the staff. All procedures aside from treatments in the spa are performed in Hospital based and fully accredited Outpatient Ambulatory Surgical Facilities. The majority of the procedures are done using general anesthesia. In order to strengthen safety and reduce risk, a board-certified anesthesiologist administers the anesthesia and monitors you during the procedure. All post surgical care is fulfilled through an outpatient bases or inpatient at the Piper Ambulatory Surgery Center. Our staff will contact you in person or by phone and are available for any issues, questions or concerns 24/7.

Whether you have had one child or several, we’re sure your body has gone through numerous changes. Several of these transformations include new spider veins, a spreading midsection with loose skin and weakened abdominal muscles, and large breasts that have now gotten smaller and sag. The SHAW Center offers an array of procedures intended to improve the face, breast and body, while reversing the effects of pregnancy and restoring your youthful radiance. Our “Beauty after Baby” procedure consists of a tummy tuck, breast lift (with or without implants), Liposuction, breast reduction, Vaginal Rejuvenation, CoolSculpting, facial treatments and spider vein therapy. Dr. Shaw can help determine what procedures are right for you during a consultation. An abdominoplasty, better known as a tummy tuck, removes the excess skin and repairs the weak and stretched abdominal muscles. This procedure will also elevate and tighten vaginal structures. Liposuction will help get rid of resistant pockets of baby fat. A labiaplasty reduces the size of the inner labia and tightens the vaginal opening. Pregnancy hormones cause facial skin changes such as the mask of pregnancy or melasma. Different skin treatments such as microdermabrasion and skin peels will help get your skin back to normal. Vein therapy will get rid of spider veins on your legs.
When it comes to the breasts, there are several options depending on your situation. After breast-feeding, the breasts usually deflate and experience loss of volume. A breast augmentation can help correct this issue. If your breasts increased in size during your pregnancy and have now have gotten smaller and sag, a breast lift will help fix this issue and increase volume if needed. A breast reduction will not only reduce the size of your breasts but will help lift them as well.
If you are interested in having a “Beauty after Baby” procedure, contact the Shaw Center at (480) 767-1900 for a consultation!
How to Prep For Plastic Surgery
Fri, Jan 31 2014 01:24
| Aesthetics, Body, Breast, Face
Once your appointment is booked for your procedure, it is important to properly prepare not only for your actual surgery but for your recovery time as well. Before booking your surgery it is crucial that you are fully satisfied with your decision in order to avoid apprehension and nervousness. We have a few suggestions to make sure you are organized for a speedy recovery! Prior to your procedure, Dr. Shaw will give you brochures and information regarding your procedure and what to expect. Read up on as much as you can and don’t be afraid to ask him any questions you may have to better prepare yourself. It is best to have someone close to you be there for support once you initially come out of surgery and plan on taking you home. If they can be around you for a few days following the procedure in order to help take care of you, even better!
Properly prepare your home for your return from surgery. Make sure you stock up on healthy food, plenty of pillows, magazines, movies and essential ice packs. You can fill your prescription for any medication you may need beforehand so it is readily available once you are back at home.
It is very common to feel some doubts the night before surgery, which is normal. Lack of sleep and high blood pressure may come as a result; try some deep breathing or meditation techniques in order to calm yourself down or watch a funny movie to help relax. Once you are back at home, take it easy, soon enough you will be able to enjoy the benefits of your procedure!
New Year, New You!

| Aesthetics, Body, Breast, Face
With the New Year right around the corner, it’s time to start thinking of your resolutions and ways you wish to improve. Have you always considered plastic surgery? You’re not the only one! According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 14.6 million cosmetic plastic surgery procedures were performed in the U.S. last year. We have compiled a list of great reason on why you should contemplate going under the knife or having cosmetic procedures.
Reconstructive surgery is a great option for those that have insecurities due to scarring or defects. Accidents can cause disfiguration or scarring that reconstructive surgery can help reduce and eliminate. Birth defects like cleft lips and ear deformities can be repaired to a standard image through a sequence of surgeries as the person grows. The majority of women who have undergone a mastectomy turn to reconstructive surgery in order to relieve psychological pain. For those that have undergone a major weight loss, plastic surgery is a great alternative to remove excess skin that you are unable to lose. One of the most common reasons to get plastic surgery is for your own self-esteem and image. If you have certain insecurities, plastic surgery will help boost your self-confidence and make you feel better about yourself! If you are not ready to commit to plastic surgery, there are many non-invasive treatments, procedures and products that The Shaw Center offers that still produce noticeable results. Products like Botox can be used to enhance your appearance and can also be used for medical reasons such as reducing migraines and sweating. According to Before After Surgery Toolbox, the top ten reasons people give for having plastic surgery are to turn back the hands of time, look like a beauty, not a beast, look smokin’ hot (sometimes like a person one admires), erase mistakes (like scars due to an overzealous sense of immortality), get rid of too much “me,” make more of “me” in the right places, to make my partner happy (wrong reason), to fix what’s broken (reconstructive surgery), to make sex better (because I’ll look and feel sexier), and to be happy with my looks (comfortable in my own skin.) Whatever your reasoning may be for plastic surgery, schedule a consultation with Dr. Shaw at (480) 767-1900 in order to discuss your options and improve yourself for the New Year. We wish everyone a very happy New Year!
