Achieve The Natural Look

Sometimes, less is more.  This mantra might seem to go against the recent contouring makeup trend takeover.  However, you can still achieve the polished look that all of your favorite beauty bloggers are advocating, all the while putting less effort forth in doing so. Our SPA offers a variety of services that can help to fully enhance the natural look that you’re already rocking.

One of the most feminine qualities a woman can have is her lashes. While there are many temporary solutions for creating longer-looking lashes, Latisse is a product that will actually grow your natural lashes longer and fuller than ever before.

Laser Resurfacing

Refreshed, glowing skin is always desired, but not always the easiest to achieve. There are a variety of outside contributing factors that can work against you, such as sun exposure and dry atmospheres, which can speed up the aging process. Fight for your glow with laser resurfacing, offered at our SPA, for skin rejuvenation. This service will leave your skin smoother and your complexion flawless.

Permanent Cosmetics

What if we told you that you could save time getting ready and still feel as beautiful as ever without even having to pull out your cosmetics bag?  Permanent make-up, also known as micropigmentation, is another service we offer at our SPA that will help to not only define your eyes, pronounce your eyebrows more but also help to pucker your lips through shading.

Nouveau Contour, which is the device we use for micropigmentation at our SPA, is a leader in the development of new techniques and ensures superior outcomes and results. Not only is this "lunch time" procedure virtually painless and requires no down time, but you can anticipate your make-up to last anywhere from 5 to 7 years before even needing to have it touched up again.

Our very own Brandi Padilla is a licensed aesthetician, a medical laser technician and also a permanent make-up artist who understands the importance of fulfilling the needs of her clients in wanting to achieve effortless beauty.

“People want to ideally wake up looking and feeling good, and now you can with a little help from permanent cosmetics, “ says Brandi.

Breast Cancer Awareness Basics

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and here at The SHAW Center we take the importance of breast cancer awareness and educating our patients on its impact very seriously. Nearly 12 percent of women in the U.S. will be affected by breast cancer at some point in their lives, and because it’s so common it’s extremely vital to know even the basics of this reality. Below we have some true or false statements to shed some light and clear up some common misconceptions once and for all.

True OR False? Breast Cancer Only Affects Women
False.  Each year there are over 2,000 men who become diagnosed with breast cancer, and the cancer can lead to death in 1 out of 5 of those men.  So while breast cancer is more common in women, it can still affect men in a drastic way.

True OR False? Breast Cancer is the Second Leading Cause of Death for Women
True.  It is estimated that 1 in 8 women in the United States will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Annually, over 40,000 women in the United States pass due to breast cancer.

True OR False? There are Almost 3 Million Breast Cancer Survivors in the U.S. Today
True. Each year over 240,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer, and while breast cancer is a leading cause of death for women, there are still many that defeat the cancer.

True OR False: Breast Cancer is Contagious
False. While a percentage of breast cancer is thought to be hereditary, breast cancer is not an airborne disease that you can catch from someone or something else. That being said, practicing a healthy lifestyle can help to reduce the risk of getting breast cancer.

True OR False? A Lump on the Breast Means Breast Cancer
False.  Not all lumps found on a breast are linked to breast cancer, and only small amounts actually are.  While it is still important to have any unusual or concerning lumps checked out by a doctor, thankfully it may not always result in breast cancer.

Quick Home Remedies For Dry Hair

Arizona’s dry heat is no friend to the health of our hair.  Not to mention, the idea of continuously spending time and money at the hair salon for chemically made conditioning masks isn’t ultra appealing either. Luckily, there are a few at home remedies that can help with naturally conditioning dry hair.

Coconut Oil
What doesn’t coconut oil help with?  From being a healthier oil to cook with to an excellent skin moisturizer, coconut oil does it all! In addition to all of its other miracle purposes, it’s even used to help strengthen and condition hair. Apply the oil in its liquid form to damp hair, and leave in for approximately an hour.  Wash the oil out while still in the shower, and appreciate your healthy, renewed locks once dried.

Egg Yolk and Avocado
Both eggs and avocado are considered to be superfoods. However, not only are they filled with a multitude of health benefits, they are also great for moisturizing hair.  All you’ll need is half of an avocado and two egg yolks.  Mix the two ingredients together well and then apply to wet or damp hair.  Let it sit for about 20 minutes, and then wash out for silky smooth results.

Yogurt, Honey and Olive Oil
Honey in your hair? Who would have thought! Mix one-teaspoon olive oil with one-tablespoon honey and a fourth of a cup of plain yogurt until all of the ingredients are blended together well.  Apply the mixture to damp hair, and leave it in for about 15 minutes before you wash it out completely.

Banana and Almond Oil
These two ingredients are the couple of the year for your hair.  Mash up half of a banana and mix with one teaspoon almond oil.  Apply this mixture to the bottom half of your damp hair, and let sit for about half an hour, then wash.  The proteins and thickness of the banana will help to protect your hair, while the oil works to add moisture and soften your mane, rendering it far healthier than before.

Things To Know About Laser Hair Removal

No one wants to deal with mortifying waxing experiences, messy at-home creams or last minute bikini season shaving. When it comes to removing unwanted body hair, laser hair removal is both an effective and long-lasting solution. The SPA at The SHAW Center offers the Lumenis LightSheer Infinity for 75% faster treatments than the average hair reduction session, and it can be used on all skin types. There are a few things you should know before setting on your way to a silky smooth lifestyle.

Avoid the Sun Before Your Treatments
Laser hair removal works best on dark hair and pale skin, so if you’re tan the effectiveness of treatments can be hindered. When your skin is tanned, the laser has to be reduced, which can render it less effective as well. Additionally, you’ll need to keep your recently treated areas out of  sunlight, so it’s best to begin these treatments during autumn or winter.

Don’t Expect Instant Results
We wish it only took the one treatment, but good things take time. While our SPA offers the gold standard in laser hair removal with the LightSheer Infinity, we still recommend anywhere from five to six sessions to see drastic results.

You Can’t Target the Whole Body at Once
If someone tells you that you can, you’ve been seriously misinformed. While our SPA is all about helping you to achieve your aesthetic goals, we’re big on safety too. There’s only a certain amount of cosmetic laser light and heat your body can safely absorb each session.

Consistency is Key
Your hair follicles are on their own growth cycle, so those who see the best results will typically go in for treatment every four to six weeks in order to maximize eliminating the most follicles. This time frame also allows the dead hair shafts to fall out on their own.

Our SPA is offering a free laser hair removal package when you buy the first one now through the end of September. Call our SPA at (480)767-1900 to learn more about this special.

How to Properly Prepare for Your Tattoo Removal Appointment

It’s unlikely that you’ll go through life having absolutely no regrets, but if there’s some you’re able to erase, then we’re all for it.  Not all tattoos are timeless, and that’s why we have a solution. The PicoSure Tattoo Removal laser is the gold standard in tattoo removal, and our SPA not only offers this service but also highly experienced and well-trained laser technicians to help you achieve your desired results.

Be Realistic About Your Expectations

Your tattoo may take more than one session to fade away and can take between 4-8 months of treatments to achieve the desired results.  Also, the outcome of the treatments may vary depending on the depth of needle penetration used by the artist, as well as the color of the ink.  While it is normal to experience a little pain, the PicoSure Tattoo Laser at the SPA at the SHAW Center is far more comfortable than other tattoo removal technologies.

Excellent Aftercare is a Must

You may experience some side effects after the procedure that your technician can discuss in depth with you.  It’s very important to ice the treated area when needed and to not pick at any blisters if they should arise.  Be very delicate with the area after the procedure in order to ensure you won’t scar or get an infection.

Ask as Many Questions as You Need

As with most procedures, it’s vital to feel completely comfortable in the hands of your technician.  Don’t hesitate to ask any and all questions about post care and pre-treatment, and feel free to reach out to your technician after the procedure for additional follow-up questions. Whether you’re wondering how easily a certain color will be to remove or the time in which it will take to erase your particular tattoo, we have an answer.  Never be afraid to ask the questions that are important to you, so that your technician can provide you with the best overall experience.

5 Toxic Makeup Ingredients to Avoid

What you put in your body is just as much of a concern as what you put on it. Your skin can easily absorb most products, and that’s why when it comes to cosmetics it’s essential to know exactly the types of ingredients that go into your makeup. We’ve rounded up five potentially harmful ingredients that could be living in your cosmetic bag this very minute.

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE, AKA Teflon®)

PTFE can be found in some foundations, pressed or loose powder, bronzer, blush and many other makeup products.  PTFE provides a smooth and sleek finish, which is why it’s desirable among makeup lines. PTFE can also be disguised as other ingredients such as DEA-C8-18 or Perfluoroalkylethyl Phospate.

Lead, arsenic, mercury, etc.

These ingredients can be found in lip products, eyeliner, as well as foundation. Heavy metals can be added intentionally or found as contaminants. However, their presence in cosmetics is only restricted in the United States, while they are completely banned in Canada, Japan, and the EU.

Talc is an ingredient found within some foundations, eye shadows and even baby powder.  The primary uses of Talc are to make products appear opaque on the skin, as well as to prevent caking.  Talc can pose health risks when it contains asbestos, so always search for companies that certify that their talc is free of asbestos on their websites and products.

Butylated Compounds

Butylated Compounds (BHA, BHT) are present in some lip products, sunscreen and face makeup. BHT typically serves as an antioxidant and preservative within makeup, food and animal feed.  The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) claims that there is a fair amount of evidence to conclude that BHT is a human irritant.

Carbon Black

Carbon Black can be found in eyeliner, mascaras, eye shadows and other face makeup.  Carbon black that is available for commercial use contains polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are possible human carcinogens.  Carbon Black can also be identified as D & C Black No. 2, Acetylene Black, or Thermal Black and is restricted, but no banned, by the United States and the Europe Union.

5 Causes That Are Secretly Aging Your Skin

Aging is inevitable, so it’s important to at least be cautious of the factors that can exacerbate this process in order to stall the hands of time when we can. While some causes seem more obvious than other, such as sun exposure and smoking, there are a multitude of other under-the-radar variables that can also lead to a weathered complexion.

Spraying Perfume/Cologne On Your Neck

Did you know that one of the main ingredients in perfume and cologne is alcohol? Alcohol increases your photosensitivity, which means you’re more likely to sunburn in the areas where you’ve applied the fragrance. Our necks and chests are the areas on our bodies that are most susceptible to signs of aging, so it’s best to spray your clothes with the scent in order to minimize your chances of premature aging.

Fad Diets

Juicing, the “Raw Food Diet” and the “Master Cleanse” are all examples of fad diets.   Fad diets can eliminate a beneficial food group out of the mix, which means your body isn’t getting what it entirely needs.  Your skin requires lots of nutrients, antioxidants and protein in order to age well.  Next to water, protein is the most plentiful substance in your body.

Your Pillow

Most of us have a favorite side of our body that we like to sleep on, whether it’s on the left, right, or even your stomach.  When you sleep on a particular side,  your face is continuously smashed into the pillow night after night, which can weaken the connective tissue and collagen on that certain favored side.  When it comes to combatting premature aging, it’s best to at least attempt to sleep on your back in order to keep skin smooth and symmetrical.

Gel Manicures

Gel manicures look incredible, but the process of drying the gel polish under the UV or LED nail lamps puts your hands at risk for premature aging. Both UV and LED nail lamps produce UVA rays, so the Skin Cancer Foundation recommends applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen 20 minutes prior to UV light exposure.

Eye Makeup

It’s incredibly important to remove makeup before falling asleep each night, but it’s equally as important to be as gentle as possible when removing makeup.  Particularly when it comes removing eye makeup, the constant rubbing and scrubbing can cause the delicate skin on and around the eye to wrinkle and age.  Always use gentle rubbing motions when removing eye makeup, and stick to an oil-based eye makeup remover that will help to breakdown the product.

Common Skin Myths Debunked

When you're focused on skin health and aesthetics, it’s inevitable to run into your fair share of myths and assumptions. There are plenty of skin-related myths out there, and we feel that it’s time to shed some light on a few of those tall tales. We’ve rounded up some of the most common ones in order to debunk them once and for all.

Cellulite is directly correlated to a poor diet.

Cellulite is caused by a variety of different factors including, genetics, lifestyle, hormones and diet.  Cellulite is also more prevalent in women than men; in fact, at least 90% of all women will experience cellulite during their lifetime.  The appearance of cellulite can be reduced by regular exercise and a diet low in fat. However, even individuals that are lean and eat healthy can still experience this issue.

What you eat has no effect on your skin.

A few studies were conducted in the 70’s claiming that diet and acne have no direct correlation.  Since then, these findings have been falsified, and it’s now been determined that diets with a high-glycemic index can in fact lead to breakouts.  Acne flare-ups along the jawline can also indicate an allergy or sensitivity to dairy products.

Sunscreen/sunblock is the same thing.

Sunblock offers physical protection by sitting atop of the skin in order to provide a barrier between the skin and UVB light.  Sunscreen offers chemical protection by absorbing into the skin, providing a barrier between the skin and UVA light.  UVA and UVB light are completely different light spectrums, and the Skin Cancer Foundation recommends protection from both, which is available in sunscreens labeled as “broad-spectrum.”

You will age just like your Mom.

Genetics play an obvious and vital role within our bodies.  However, when it comes to aging, genes only a small part since so many other factors can affect our aging processes.  Smoking, sun exposure, diet and skin care regimes can all transform the composition of our skin and how well we age.  If mom looks great, be sure to follow her footsteps and limit sun exposure, wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen that you can reapply throughout the day, adopt a nutritious diet, acquire a simple yet effective skin care regime and don’t smoke.

Plastic Surgery Centers V. Med Spas

In this day and age med spas have become increasingly more popular and have developed a greater presence in the world of aesthetics. Unfortunately, the cosmetic industry has become more convoluted with falsified advertising and misleading promises as a result of the ever-growing trend of Botox and fillers. However, board certified plastic surgery centers have consistently remained just as qualified throughout.
There are significant differences between plastic surgery centers and medical spa doctors. One of the obvious distinctions being that a plastic surgeon that is board certified has been required to go through extensive training and rigorous exams in order to be the most knowledgeable that they can be in the field of medicine.
It is also not uncommon for the doctor overseeing the med spa to come from an entirely irrelevant background. While there is a requirement is to be board certified, the certification could technically be in an unrelated field.  You always want to check to see if the doctor’s experience is first relevant.
Additionally, med spas are not held to the same standard as a free standing accredited medical or surgical facility. There are different safety standards that don’t necessarily measure up to a more credentialed medical facility or doctor’s office.

Everything To Know For Your Initial Consultation

Consultations are one of the most essential steps in determining the right procedure for you, and that’s why it’s imperative to know exactly what to expect when going into one. The Spa at The SHAW Center offers complimentary consultations because we understand the importance of assessing your individual needs and tailoring to those.

Things To Bring
Typically, you’ll want to either know your medical history off hand or even preferably have it with you. This usually includes any medical problems that might run in your immediate family, known allergies and reactions, as well as previous surgeries or procedures you’ve had. You’ll also want to make sure you bring all of your medications, including vitamins and supplements.

Questions To Ask
Come prepared with all of your concerns, such as possible risks, preparations, downtime and post treatment.  This is also an ideal opportunity to learn more about your doctor’s qualifications. Dr. Shaw is especially experienced as a double-boarded Plastic Surgeon, which required 7 years of surgical training alone.

Financial Plan
Make sure you ask about the available finance options during your consultation. Choosing your surgeon should not be based entirely on price; however, it’s smart to stay away from someone whose fees are way lower than the average. A good rule of thumb in avoiding financial troubles is to have available funds twice as much as the actual cost of the procedure.

Get A Leg Up With Lasers

Laser and light-based treatments have become increasingly more popular over the years as a solution to many different aesthetic goals. Laser therapy beams highly concentrated light into the desired area of treatment or problem area in order to eliminate fine lines, wrinkles, skin pigmentation and even hair! Not only can laser treatments be quick and effective, but they also require little to no downtime and are performed non-invasively.  The Spa at The SHAW Center offers a variety of different laser treatment options depending on what you’re choosing to eliminate.

Laser Skin Resurfacing
Laser Skin Resurfacing, or a PicoFacial, helps to eliminate wrinkles, as well as restores your skin to a more youthful state. Laser resurfacing can rejuvenate your skin by removing the outermost layers, as well as firming the underlying collagen. All in all, it can help to target age spots, sun damage, scarring and fine lines.

Laser Hair Removal
Say goodbye to the annoying task of having to shave regularly with laser hair removal at The SHAW Center. Unwanted body hair is never okay, and that’s why we offer a solution to rid your physique of it and render you stubble-free.  Our lasers aim a concentrated beam of light at the area of hair, and by doing so the hair follicle absorbs the light, damaging the follicle enough to stop growth.

Laser Tattoo Removal
The Spa at The SHAW Center also offers the gold standard in laser tattoo removal with the PicoSure laser.  This revolutionary system can erase or change tattoos and pigments with greater clearance and 50% fewer treatments than any other tattoo removal laser. The PicoSure laser also targets difficult ink colors, such as blues and greens.

Give Adult Acne The Boot

Let’s face it. There’s nothing more frustrating than unpredictable breakouts and adult acne. Not only do adult women have to worry about fending off wrinkles, but battling zits can also be another annoying day-to-day battle. Certain factors, such as stress, hormones and diet can all attribute to acne resurfacing. However, there are ways to combat this and return your complexion back to a relatively clear state.

Bye, Bye Blemishes
Part of adult acne’s game is the unwanted blemishes they can leave behind. Scarring is not uncommon post breakout, especially when you exacerbate the problem by picking.  However, chemical peels can help to rid your skin of hyperpigmentation and acne. Our spa offers a variety of different chemical peels, such as customized ones from Skin Media, as well as a PCA peel.
The Spa at The SHAW Center also offers FotoFacials, or PicoFacials, which employ an intense pulsed light in combination with radio frequency to effectively treat irregular skin pigmentation and discoloring.

You Are What You Eat
Diet can be a huge contributing factor to adult breakouts. It’s important to be starch conscious by avoiding high-glycemic-index carbohydrates, such as white bread and sugar-laden foods. It’s smart to balance your diet by incorporating whole grains and veggies into your diet that won’t aggravate acne.

Master Your Make-Up
Makeup is intended to mask skin issues, but when used incorrectly it can actually enhance the underlying problem. Opt for a matte or oil-free concealer, so as not to draw attention to your already shiny skin. Remember that light shades magnify and dark ones recede, so never put too much light concealer or highlighter onto raised bumps. Also, always remember to remove your makeup before you call it a night or head to the gym.

SculpSure v. CoolSculpting

The Spa at The SHAW Center offers both CoolSculpting and now SculpSure. With two CoolSculpting machines (DualSculpting) and the SculpSure, which has four separate panels, we can now treat as many as 6 areas in just on hour! These non-surgical liposuction treatments are a total game changer and help to target fat in even the most stubborn areas. While these two fat reduction alternatives are both extremely effective, it is important to know the difference between the two.

Treatment Time
CoolSculpting takes one hour or more per applicator, often requiring four hours to treat the entire adbodem, while SculpSure takes only 25 minutes for up to four applicators.

Both procedures are virtually painless. SculpSure utilizes a flat non-suction applicator with a cooling plate that is easily tolerated. CoolSculpting uses suction based applicators and the post procedure massage can be quite uncomfortable.

The desired results from both of these procedures can be quite fulfilling. However, they both produce different timelines for when one might see these results. SculpSure can reduce up to 25% of fat pockets and usually takes anywhere from 6 weeks to 3 months for optimal results. CoolSculpting will show signs of permanent fat reduction of around 22% in 2-4 months.

Treatable Areas
CoolSculpting’s treatable areas are limited based on the applicator design, whereas SculpSure can target the abdomen and love handles, as well as a multitude of other areas, such as under the chin, arms and thighs because of the applicator’s flexibility.

If you haven't already signed up for The Spa at The SHAW Center's SculpSure event this Tuesday, May 17th from 5 to 7 pm, call our office at (480)767-1900 to see if we still have a spot for you! The Cure to a Clear Complexion

Our face is the first thing people notice and a huge part of our identity. Maintaining a clear complexion is not always the easiest feat, but definitely worth prioritizing. With so many products and beauty remedies out there today, it can seem overwhelming not knowing which ones to trust, but The Spa at The Shaw Center has you and your skin covered! We believe the answer to a flawless face lies within a combination of both skincare products and some simple home regimens.

Ditch the Washcloth
Washcloths can do more damage than good by disrupting your skin’s natural state. Typically using one can lead to irritation and redness, and not to mention they’re breeding grounds for bacteria. Instead, try Clarisonic, which is a sonic technology proven to gently yet effectively loosen dirt and oil to clear your pores. It micro-massages twice as effectively as manually cleansing does and is available for purchase at The Shaw Center.

Clean Your Essentials
A more common sense, but highly underestimated cause for breakouts comes from your pillowcases and makeup brushes. These two vehicles collect your oils and dirt daily and are later reapplied to your face when used again and again without first being washed. We suggest using a gentle cleanser for both and avoid sanitizers that employ harsh fragrance, as this added ingredient can also lead to clogged pores.

Moisturize Appropriately
Believe it or not, there is such thing as over moisturizing and it can even lead to breakouts. Adding too much product to your skin can clog your pores and prevent your complexion from being able to breathe. We recommend using a moisterizer with hyaluronic acic, which helps to retain water. One of our favorite hydrating lotions is our ZO Skin Health Ossential Daily Power Defense

Exfoliate Effortlessly
Regular exfoliation is essential in maintaining your skin. Your dead skin cells can tend to collect over time, creating a dull complexion and preventing you from showing off that glow you most definitely deserve. Microdermabrasion,  is a non-surgical exfoliating treatment that can help you to achieve healthier, younger-looking skin. The Spa at The Shaw Center offers this as a service and highly recommends it for those looking to rid themselves of stubborn blemishes.

Microneedling 101

Not too long ago, if we had told you that running a needling pen over your face would actually benefit you – you would think we were crazy. DermaPenning, also known as Microneedling, has made a huge splash in the skincare world recently. With noticeable results with little to no downtime, this is one treatment you need to try.

How does it work?

We use the DermaPen 3, a cutting-edge version of a DermaPen, that painlessly penetrates the outer layers of the skin. This creates micro-injuries that spur collagen and elasitn to repair, regrow and heal skin making way for smoother, more even skin. Also, almost any part of the body can be treated.

What will it do for my skin?

Like a peel without the burn, micro needling treatments help with wrinkle reduction, texture and tone improvement. Pores are decreased and skin looks and feels firmer and refreshed. Also, if you have hyperpigmentation, sun spots or scarring, these treatment helps fade those blemishes and also erases acne scars, trauma scars and stretch marks.

What does it feel like?
The quick, 15 to 30-minute treatment feels like a light buffing similar to sandpaper being rubbed gently across skin.

Is there downtime?
Right after your treatment you will notice an instant glow and some redness that goes away usually within four hours. After 12 hours, mineral makeup is recommended and skin is healed within 24 hours.

For more information, you can call 480-767-1900 to schedule a complimentary consultation to talk with one of our aesthetician pros.

Recently, plastic surgery has been on the rise. 15.6 million people in the United States had a cosmetic procedure in 2014, a 3% increase from 2013 and a dramatic 104% increase from 2000.

With a surge in procedures, plastic surgery has become more widely accepted and has also opened the door for new non-invasive procedures. Instead of boring holiday gift staples like socks or a scarf, here’s our guide to skin and body services for everyone on your list.

For the clean freak: Clarisonic. This facial cleansing tool has become a household name and makes a great gift for those who are skincare obsessed or like things a little more squeaky clean than the rest of us. Not only does it purify pores on the daily, it also helps even skin texture and fight off fine lines.

For the poolside enthusiast: Sculpsure. In Arizona, pool season gets here early. Give the gift of a bikini-ready bod with brand new Sculpsure. The revolutionary laser reduces fat permanently with less treatments and zero downtime.

For the extra scruffy guy: Laser Hair Removal. Although it might not be a daily topic of conversation, no one likes unsightly hair (ew!). Help out with a package of laser hair removal session to get him ready for beach vacays and whatever else comes along in 2016.

For the celeb-obsessed: Lip Augmentation. 2015 was the year of the Kylie Jenner lip and women everywhere are jumping on the bandwagon to achieve volume-packed lips like the teen social media queen. Pump up your gift game this year with injectable fillers that not only increase pout size, but also smooth lips and rejuvenate the entire mouth area.

For the selfie pro: Smart Lipo Neck. This profile-perfecting procedure uses a laser to melt fat and tighten skin. With almost no scarring (the incision is only one millimeter), downtime is minimal. Grab a selfie stick and make it a packaged gift.

  • No color is safe: The multiple wavelengths of the PicoSure laser targets difficult ink colors – even blue and green.
  • Veteran regretters welcome: With new technology, even tattoos that have been previously treated (unsuccessfully) can be re-treated. Groundbreaking technology of the laser causes ink particles to break down into tiny fragments, which are then naturally eliminated by the body.

Everything You Need to Know About Botox

Last week our team kicked off the Holiday season with our annual BOTOX® Days event. The perfect treatment for party-prepped skin, Botox is a quick, easy way to get rid of fine lines and wrinkles. The three most popular spots for Botox include:

- Horizontal forehead wrinkles
- Crow’s feet lines around the eyes
- The “11” (two vertical) lines between the eyebrows

If you’re a newbie to facial injections or want to brush up on your Botox smarts, we’re breaking down five of the most commonly asked questions about this anti-aging phenomenon.

1.    When is it time to get Botox?  What visible signs should I lookout for?

As an overarching recommendation, adding injectables to your anti-aging arsenal is a completely personal decision. Many women start getting Botox between the ages of 25 to 35 when they notice deeper expression lines around the eyes and forehead. The only thing to consider when it comes to timing is that once wrinkles are deep, Botox can help soften them, but may not eliminate them completely. Whatever you choose, Botox will erase or fade lines and make a noticeable improvement at any age.

2.    How long does Botoxlast?

Treatments last about three months. Once you have your initial session and continue to receive injections on a regular basis, you may start to not need as many units and transition to more of a “maintenance” plan to keep lines in check.

3.    What does Botox feel like? Will my face feel numb after I get it?

There’s no way around it, there’s a needle involved. On the bright side, the needles we use are small and thin, so patients say they feel a subtle prick, nothing super painful and much less impact than a regular shot. You shouldn’t feel any numbness or irritation.

4.    How long does an actual Botox session take? Is there anything I should do prior to or after getting Botox?

Botox is a super simple treatment. You lay back in a chair and the injection specialist will ask you what areas of your face bother you and what you would like treated. They will also give you recommendations to achieve your ideal look so there’s no guesswork involved. After a few strategically-placed injections you will be ready to go in 20 to 30 minutes max.

Depending on your body, some patients notice slight bruising post-treatment. To help prevent bruising, stay away from pain medication prior to your treatment. Also avoid drinking for a few days before you get Botox.

Aftercare is easy. Don’t lie down for four hours after the treatment and avoid rubbing or touching the area. That also means that for the first few hours, hats and headbands are a no-no. Avoid exercise the day you receive the treatment (about 12 hours on the safe side) and stay away from saunas, steam rooms or any other place or activity that can raise your body temperature. Some patients see results in as little as 72 hours, but wait a week for full results.
5.    Do I need to use a specific skincare line or products after a treatment?

We recommend using medical-grade skincare products to your skin healthy and protected. Our team can help you choose a regimen fro our wide variety of product lines. but generally, a high-quality face cleanser, serum infused with Hyaluronic acid, hydrating night cream and and a SPF-packed moisturizer for daytime is recommended. Living in the dry AZ desert, keeping skin hydrated and plump is key to getting the most out of Botox.

Reduce Signs of Aging With Sculptra Aesthetic Facial Volumizer

There are many products and treatments available when it comes to reducing the visible signs of aging, but there is nothing quite like Sculptra® aesthetic. Referred to by some physicians as "Face lift in a bottle", Sculptra® aesthetic represents a new and unique, minimally invasive option that helps facial skin regain a more youthful and natural-looking appearance.

Over time, our skin loses collagen and fat, reducing its full, firm, youthful appearance. It becomes loose and starts to wrinkle.  This reduction in tissue volume can make cheeks and eyes appear sunken, making us look older than we are.  Injectable Sculptra® aesthetic can help regain a firm texture and restore lost volume by promoting production of your body’s natural collagen in the treated areas. Sculptra® aesthetic is a safe, synthetic, and biocompatible material that is injected below the surface of the skin to correct the effects of fat loss (lipoatrophy).

Sculptra® aesthetic is particularly suited to treating the lower face and differs from conventional line fillers by providing more of a lifting, volumizing result. Sunken skin and wrinkles can be significantly reduced by restoring facial contours without surgery.  This process of natural restructuring of the skin continues long after the course of treatment has been completed.

As with all injectable fillers, technique is a vital component in delivering the best potential outcome, and with Dr. Shaw and his staff having over 20 years of injection experience, you can count on incredible results.

The SHAW Center is running a special on Sculptra right now where you can save $200 when you purchase a minimum of two viles. You can also earn an extra $20 off with a Galderma Reward certificate when you sign up for the Aspire Rewards Program at www.aspirerewards.comprior to your injection appointment. Upon completion of your two vile injection session, you’ll be one step closer to VIP Club Membership where you’ll earn a $50 Galderma Reward for a future appointment.

The perks don’t end there! For every new Aspire Rewards Member the month of October, Galderma will donate $25 to National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc.

Say Goodbye To Dry Skin With These Moisturizing Mantras

Dry skin is not only uncomfortable to the touch, but it can also negatively affect your appearance by rendering a rough complexion even after makeup is applied. Dry skin can be caused by weather changes, harsh soaps and sun damage among many other things. We’ve all experienced this inevitable annoyance, and sometimes it’s not as easily fixed with moisturizers. However, there’s many other natural remedies you can practice to correct cracked skin.

Olive Oil Cleanser
Olive oil is an ideal natural oil to implement into your beauty routine when you begin facing dryness. Gently rub the oil into your skin and place a warm cloth over your face afterwards until it cools off. This alternative method leaves your skin hydrated without wiping your skin of its natural oils.

Avocado and Honey Face Mask
This all-natural home remedy calls for just two ingredients: avocado and honey.  Both of these staples are particularly moisturizing and are packed with essential nutrients that will help to sooth your parched skin when applied topically.

Humidify Your Room
This simple adjustment can make the world of difference. Humidifiers release large amounts of water into the air that your skin can absorb while you sleep. Weather conditions can easily suck your skin of all its natural moister, so make the plans to restore your complexion through this must-have bedside accessory.

Bye, Bye, Washcloth
This may seem like a crazy gesture considering you use your washcloth daily to cleanse your face, but it’s fact of the matter is it’s just too abrasive for your skin. Even if you don’t use a towel to scrub your face, avoid using one to just dry. Instead try using your hands or gentle cleansing brush to lather your face wash, and a soft cotton cloth to pat dry your face dry.

When all else fails, you can find your moisturizing mantra here at The SHAW Center where we offer a variety of different skincare lines with highly effective ingredients that produce incredible results.

The Benefits of ZO Skin Health's Ossential Daily Power Defense

The Shaw Center offers a wide range of skin care products, but one of the best selling products is ZO Skin Health’s Daily Power Defense Anti-aging Formula, which helps to restore both your skin’s function and elasticity. This bottled up fountain of youth provides continuous results and solutions without much effort on your end at all.

About ZO Skin Health
For over three decades, Dr. Zein Obagi has mindfully crafted a wide spectrum of therapeutic skincare products and treatments that are exclusively available through skin health professionals, such as our own center. ZO combines all the latest advances in skin therapy technology, such as plant cell components and biotechnology complexes, with regard to all skin conditions, ages, genders and ethnicities in order to provide the best and most effective outcomes.

The Power of Retinol
ZO’s Daily Power Defense is a retinol-based formula that maximizes the penetration of retinoic acid to reduce signs of aging, such as fine likes, wrinkles, sun damage and age spots. This magic ingredient comes from vitamin A and is one of the few substances with small enough molecules to reach skin receptors in order to stimulate the natural production of collagen and elastin, which in turn help to create healthy skin.

Daily Power Defense not only employs retinol to the skin, but it is also rich in other specialized DNA repairing enzymes that work around the clock. By implementing this anti-aging soldier into your beauty routine you are not only restoring skin function, but also preventing against UV damage and minimizing pigmentation.

Our Shaw Spa also provides many other products, as well as alternative options to repairing and rejuvenating your skin. Schedule your complimentary consultation to discover what the best route for you is.

Real Reviews From Real Patients: Revision Intellishade Broad-Spectrum SPF 45

The Shaw Spa offers up a variety of different skincare lines and products, but when asking around the office, Revision Skincare’s Intellishade anti-aging tinted moisturizer seemed to be a fan favorite of our fabulous Shaw Center women. This miracle moisturizer not only helps to conceal blemishes, but it reduces fine lines and wrinkles, as well as protects your skin with its UVA and UVB broad-spectrum coverage.

One of our former patients, Deborah, 61, recently started using Intellishade and was able to provide honest feedback to us. We asked, and she answered. Here is what she had to say about Intellishade’s formula.

What skincare products were you using prior and what objections did you have with them?
I’ve used everything under the sun from drug store products like Neutrogena’s Rapid Wrinkle Repair and Roc Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Serum, which I found only made my face appear oily and was far too greasy going on. Everything else I have experimented with has shown little to no results and does nothing for the complexion of my skin as far as color correction goes.
What do you look for in anti-aging skincare?
To appear twenty years younger. Kidding. However, I do expect to see results after consistent use, at least with my finer lines and wrinkles. I want to be able to have a glow without appearing shiny, and ideally, I would like to know that it’s not just correcting, but also preventing further damage from occurring.
What was your first impression of Revision’s Intellishade moisturizer upon application?
I was extremely impressed with how evenly and easily it went on. The “one shade fits all” promise really rang true. I noticed my redness disappear almost instantly, and it felt incredibly silky smooth on my skin. I couldn’t feel that I had anything on my face, but there was a noticeable difference in the evenness of my skin tone afterwards.
What was most ideal about this product and would you considering continuing to use it?
I am always on the go, and I especially loved how fast and simple using Intellishade was. Because I am constantly out and about, it’s difficult for me to touch up, but I noticed with this product that the subtle color remained on my face evenly throughout my days without getting blotchy hours later.  My skin is also more sensitive, and a lot of other products have tended to cause minor breakouts, whereas this minimized my pores without seeming to clog them. I would absolutely plan on continuing to use this and am excited to see what it does for my lines and wrinkles once I’ve applied it more long term.

Facial Rejuvenation Based On Your Unique Complexion

Your face is your most important accessory and maintaining a healthy and vital complexion should be made as achievable as possible. VISIA Complexion Analysis is an imaging systems service offered at The Shaw Center that helps you to attain the most effective facial rejuvenation plan by taking a clear, multi-dimensional portrait of your face.
This system succeeds in personalizing your procedure as much as possible by providing your skin care professional with the necessary comprehensive data needed in order to develop the most competent plan for you. It does so by collecting multi-spectral images that aid in developing a rejuvenation regime based off your specific complexion requirements.
VISIA Complexion Analysis measures individual aspects of your skin, such as texture, spots, pores, overall skin tone and wrinkles to identify health conditions like sun damage. Once the overall health of your complexion is identified, an individualized program is created based off of each patient’s specific results.  VISIA’s precise imaging takes into consideration all facial characteristics and does so throughout your skincare regime in order to track and monitor any changes or improvements.

Once you complete your VISIA Complexion Analysis, you are given a printed report which you can take home that details your imaging session and recommends different rejuvenation and skin care options for you.
The Shaw Center wants you to be able to see what the naked eye can’t through this service so that you can ultimately achieve the radiant complexion that you deserve through personalized treatment options. Stop trying to analyze your own skin in the mirror and instead let us and our VISIA Complexion Analysis System do it for you once and for all.

The Advantages of Dermapen

Skin needling sounds like it would be extremely invasive, right? Well it doesn't have to be! With Dermapen’s advanced technologies, there’s little to no pain when undergoing this treatment. The purpose of Dermapen is to stimulate natural collagen reproduction that will ultimately help to remove any visible signs of wrinkles, enlarged pores and other abnormalities.
Don’t Be Scared Of Scars
This advanced skin needling promotes scar-less healing, while still allowing for increased production of normal woven collagen. This treatment is very similar to fractional laser treatments, but without all the unwanted side effects and downtime. Additionally, Dermapen has actually been found to be more beneficial than chemical peels or microdermabrasion.
Traditional V. Dermapen
Unlike traditional skin needling rollers, Dermapen causes minimal damage to skin and very little discomfort and distress overall. With Dermapen you can also adjust the depth of the needle in order to tailor it to individual needs. It’s because of this that it can also be used in normally hard to reach areas, such as around the eyes, lips and nose.  The Dermapen is also much safer because of its disposable needles, which helps in avoiding the risk of cross-contamination.
It’s Just That Easy
Not only is this treatment virtually painless with almost no downtime, but the results are almost immediate. Typically, you will see results after the first treatment and you will only continue to see more significant results with time. The care process between treatments requires very little, with the suggested use of a topical treatment to aid in hydration and strengthening of the skin.
The Shaw Center recommends the Dermapen for aged and sagging skin, fine lines and wrinkles, vertical lip lines, stretch marks, scars and overall skin rejuvenation.

You Deserve A Day At The Spa

Ready, Set, Relax! It’s sometimes difficult to take the time out of our busy schedules to focus on your most important accessory: your face! We get too caught up in daily tasks to remember that taking care of ourselves should be one of our top priorities. The SHAW Center’s Spa is an oasis complete with treatments and skin solutions that will leave you wondering why you ever waited so long to make a visit. The best part of the Spa is that its services are easily catered to fit your needs and require little to no down time.
Something More A”peel”ing
Skin Peels are incredibly beneficial to maintaining that beautiful complexion of yours. Chemical peels can help to repair skin damage caused by sun exposure, minimize facial lines, as well as improve the overall skin tone and texture of your face. Things that may affect the depth of a peel include the acid concentration in the peeling agent, the number of coats that are applied, and the amount of time allowed before the acid is neutralized.
There are different types of peels you can opt for depending on the area you want to target and intensity of results. AHAs are the most gentle of the three offered at The SHAW Center Spa. They simply aid in smoothing and brightening your skin through the use of a group of glycolic, lactic and fruit acids. This particular procedure has the shortest recovery time and takes 10 minutes or less.
TCAs penetrate the skin more deeply than AHAs and are the preferred chemical solution for darker-skinned patients. This particular peel treats fine surface wrinkles, superficial blemishes and pigment problems.
The deepest penetrating peel offered at The SHAW Center Spa is Phenol, which treats more difficult skin problems, such as coarse facial wrinkles, precancerous growths and severely blotchy or damaged skin caused by sun exposure. Our center typically only uses this peel on the face and around the mouth.
Know The Difference…
Our center also offers Microdermabrasion, which is a non-surgical, exfoliating treatment for those wanting to rid themselves of age spots, freckles, fine lines, scars and rough skin. While this procedure has similar results as chemical peels, they do employ alternative techniques. A chemical peel achieves exfoliation through the use of chemical agents and is typically followed with a longer recovery process. Microdermabrasion is an exfoliating treatment, but does so by simply “sanding” with minimal to no downtime.
The Spa also offers services, such as Visia Analysis and an extensive line of well-trusted skincare products. So take the day off, kick your feet up and allow us to spoil your skin by enhancing and repairing its natural beauty!

Getting Even

Throughout your childhood you’re gifted with perfect and even-looking skin, but as time goes on it’s almost impossible to ever fully recover your baby-like complexion. Sun damage, acne breakouts in your adolescence that can lead to scarring and the natural process of aging are all contributing factors to the discoloration and unevenness of your skin tone. One common thread shared by these variables is that they’re all inevitable, no matter how hard we try to avoid them. While we may not be able to prevent it, we can most definitely repair it!

Bottoms up!
Drink, drink, drink. In fact we want you to get completely intoxicated off of water. Staying hydrated is the most important thing you can do for your body and its rejuvenation. It not only helps in cleansing your skin from the inside out, but it prevents any unwanted wrinkles by filling those pockets with necessary fluids. Of course try to avoid any sugary drinks or alcohol as much as you can since these alternatives act as moister-suckers, but we understand the occasional indulgence – we’re guilty too! So next time you’re out, ask for a tall glass of H20…Shaken, not stirred.
Good Morning, Sunshine
Nothing is better than feeling the warm sun kiss your skin. While it may seem like an attentive boyfriend one minute, it can turn into the psycho ex the next, causing nothing but damage and harm to your skin. In fact, the most common cause for an uneven skin tone is sun damage.
Start incorporating the application of sunscreen into your daily routine. Most daily moisturizers and some makeup already have a sunscreen worked into their formula but make sure it’s at least SPF 30. It’s also important to ensure that the sunscreen you’re applying has both UVA and UVB protection to help prevent from both sunspots and immediate burning. ZO Skin Health offers a wide variety of sunscreens and products to reverse the effects of sun damage, available in The SHAW Center.
We also recommend exfoliating at least once a week and employing a moisturizer thereafter.
When All Else Fails
The Shaw Center offers a complete skin rejuvenation treatment, which will leave you feeling brighter, younger and healthier. Laser360 provides a more youthful look, without an invasive procedure. It encompasses three different types of methods:  skin resurfacing, skin tightening and skin color. Through the skin resurfacing procedure, Laser360 stimulates new collagen to grow, improving your skin’s overall texture and tone.
The tightening technology will firm up any unwanted loose skin around your eyes, nose and jaw through infrared light, which creates deep healing in your skin, helping you to regain a more contoured appearance.
Finally, Laser360 will help to completely eliminate any skin pigments, broken blood vessels and vascular marks through its skin color segment.
This treatment is not only safe and effective, but it can completely transform your complexion through a nearly noninvasive experience!
Contact The SHAW Center at (480) 767-1900 to schedule an appointment to discuss customized treatment plans.

Simple Skincare For Men

Skincare isn’t just for women; guys’ skin needs some loving too.  We’re here to tell you exactly what you can do to improve your “manplexion. “  Gone are the days that you secretly steal your lady’s night cream or wonder why you’re still exhibiting breakouts as if you’re 15 again and going through puberty. We’ve got you covered.
First Things First
Every morning when you initially wake up, immediately splash cold water on your face. This quick cleanse process will help slough away dead skin cells you may have, ultimately helping to improve the dullness of your face. We recommend using a wash with glycolic acid, which will penetrate skin deeply and easily. You should also be exfoliating anywhere from once to twice a week in order to keep your face looking fresh and rejuvenated. ZO Skin Health carries an Offects Exfoliating Polish, available at The SHAW Center, which consists of ultra-fine magnesium crystals that aid in exfoliating dead skin cells and enhances epidermal turnover to produce a smoother complexion.
Quench The Thirst
Moisturizing your face is key. While exfoliating and using compounds like glycolic acid are beneficial, it can also leave your skin looking dry if you don’t take proper measures. If you’re prone to breakouts, try a product that is mostly water-based. We’re not saying you have to shave the beard either, just work around it! You ‘mustache’ what you’re doing to help remedy the situation.
In addition, make sure you’re getting your H20 fix throughout the day. Dehydration can lead to many issues that can result in bad skin. We understand that you’re still probably going to have your post-work brew with the boys, but just make sure you’re equalizing that with some water.
So What, Maybe You Still Get ID-ed
Even if you've hit the genetic gene pool and have plans to age like George Clooney, it’s essential to still take precaution with wrinkles and aging. It’s never too early to start using products like retinol cream to boost your youth and promote collagen production. Making this a habit will only continue to improve the evenness of your complexion.  ZO Skin Health offers several of their products that comprise an “Aggressive Anit-Aging Program,” otherwise they have a variety of cleansers, polishes, creams and sunscreens that help combat aging as well.
Dress The Part, Don’t Stress The Part
Some things are easier said than done. Choosing to not stress out isn’t always the easiest option but at least you can try to control it. Unfortunately, stress can lead to an imbalance in hormones, which can then completely throw off your skin’s condition, ultimately causing breakouts.  Try to let the little things go to not only improve your mental health but your skin as well.
The SHAW Center also offers a variety of different procedures to both repair and enhance your skin, such as Botox, dermal fillers and laser resurfacing. Contact us at (480) 767-1900 to schedule a consultation to see what the best option is for you.

Bottom Line: You'll Have No More Lines

Age is beauty, but age also doesn’t have to be defined by wrinkles. Let’s face it they’re inevitable, however, they are most definitely fixable. Parentheses don’t deserve a place on your face, and that’s why The SHAW Center offers a myriad of different solutions to returning your face back to its smooth and even complexion. Juvederm is just one of them!
Juvederm is a smooth injectable gel that renders your skin velvety and creaseless. It consists of a tiny needle that is used to inject a small amount of filler into the skin to “fill” the wrinkles and folds. The best part? It takes all of 15-30 minutes for immediate results to appear! Imagine that. You could have more youthful and younger looking skin in less time than it takes to put on a full face of makeup.
You’re probably also wondering what exactly this injection consists of. Juvederm is comprised of hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring protein that our body automatically produces. The pro to utilizing products that our body already contains is that there is less risk for reaction opposed to unnatural products.
The SHAW Center recommends this procedure especially when dealing with unnecessary nasolabial folds, which are unwanted wrinkles between the corners of your mouth and nose.
Juvederm results can last up to six months or longer but The SHAW Center offers supplemental “touch up” treatments to help maintain optimal and natural-looking results.
In order to find out if Juvederm or any of our other skin rejuvenation procedures are right for you, come visit us to let us further discuss options with you!

Botox Myths Busted

More than one million Botox treatments are now being carried out each year for the first time, according to www.dailymail.co.uk.com.  Although the number of people beginning to receive Botox is skyrocketing, there are still a lot of myths about the popular injection out there.  We’re here to set the bar straight and bust the myths so you know what to expect for your first time or the next time around.
First off, many believe that Botox and fillers are the same thing.  Muscle movement forms wrinkles, which makes Botox the ideal tool to relax the muscle and level out skin.  Fillers are utilized to fill in the skin around the wrinkle.
A “frozen” face is a common correlation with Botox, however this isn’t always the case.  Your results depend on where you decide to go to receive the treatment. Having Botox done from a reputable, board-certified plastic surgeon or dermatologist will ensure a reliable, secure and aesthetically pleasing procedure.
Some may believe that the results of Botox are immediate and last a while.  This all depends on the person but a patient should expect to see full results within about five days.  You can anticipate your results to last approximately 3 to 4 months.
Wrinkles are not the only use for Botox although it’s the most common.  The intention for Botox is to paralyze a certain muscle.  Botox has been endorsed by the FDA for frequent health-related cases to tackle overactive bladders, migraines, and muscle spasms aside from wrinkles.  People automatically presume that Botox is an uncomfortable procedure since needles are involved, however the majority of patients report that the treatment is bearable.  If you’re wary of needles, a local anesthetic cream can be applied to your face an hour before the procedure in order to numb your skin.
Want to save on Botox?  Join us for Botox Days at the SHAW Center Spa on Wednesday, November 12 from 9 AM – 5 PM.  Spin our wheel for savings: 10%, 15%, 20%, 50% off, $100 off, or win FREE Botox!  Space is limited for the event, please call us at (480) 767-1900 to schedule an appointment.  While you’re at it, enjoy 10% off ALL skin care product purchases the day of the event as well.

Revitalize Skin With Dermapen

Dermapen is an innovative skin needling therapy to treat aged and sagging skin, fine lines and wrinkles, stretch marks and much more.  The device utilizes multiple needles that vertically pierce the skin with Automatic Occilating Vertical Nedling (AOVN) technology.  Natural collagen production is stimulated when Dermapen is moved across the skin.
The advanced skin needling in Dermapen results in scar-less healing as well as increased production of normal collagen.  This outcome is similar to fractional laser treatments minus the side effects and downtime.  Dermapen is also believed to be more powerful and more advantageous than the majority of chemical peels and microdermabrasion.   Dermapen’s technique causes less trauma and has minimal skin damage opposed to standard skin needling rollers.  This also results in reduced pain and discomfort, which makes it a safer, more effective treatment.
Overall, Dermapen is recommended to treat aged and sagging skin, fine lines and wrinkles, vertical lip lines, skin tightening and rejuvenation, enlarged pores, stretch marks, scars (acne, surgical, and burns), and Alopecia.  Since Dermapen has a variety of uses, the recommended amount of treatments varies.  If you’re seeking rejuvenation, it’s recommended to have 4-6 treatments that are 4 weeks apart.  Six treatments are recommended for acne scarring that is spaced 6 weeks apart.  Depending on your stretch marks, it’s recommended to have 4-8 treatments that are 4-6 weeks apart.
Patients can expect to see results as soon as the first treatment- more significant results will appear the more treatments you have.  Once you have completed all of your treatments, your skin will continue to progress over the next 6-12 months.  Contact the SHAW Center at (480) 767-1900 for a complimentary skin consultation to see if Dermapen is right for you!

More on Microdermabrasion

Roughly every 28 days our body creates a new layer of skin.  When new cells form, they push their way to the skins surface.  As you begin to age, this system begins to slow down resulting in skin appearing less radiant.  Clogged pores, breakouts, uneven texture and a dull appearance can also form if the skin doesn’t shed correctly.
Microdermabrasion is available in the SHAW Center Spa and is a non-invasive exfoliating procedure that aids in repairing acne scarring, sun-damaged skin, age spots, freckles, stretch marks, fine lines, scars, and rough skin.  The treatment can be done on the face, neck, chest, hands, back, elbows, feet, almost anywhere!
Depending on your skin, the treatment can take anywhere from 15-40 minutes.  A moisturizing sun block is then applied post procedure.  You can expect to have a mild, temporary pinkness in the treated area.  Like the majority of other procedures provided in the SHAW Center Spa, the treatment doesn’t have any “down time” and you can return to work and other standard activities instantly.
The treatment is conducted utilizing a jet of fine mineral crystals that are brushed over the skin’s surface by forming a soft vacuum.  The crystals then sit on the skin accompanying dead/damaged skin cells.  The crystals softly exfoliate about 20-25 microns of dead skin cells of the outermost layer, leaving younger looking skin to appear.
In order to achieve optimal results, it’s recommended to have several treatments.  Treatments are usually scheduled two to three weeks apart.  Throughout your tailored treatment program, you’ll experience gradual improvement.  Microdermabrasion will make your skin feel soft and silky with a healthy glow.  Contact the SHAW Center at (480) 767-1900 for further questions or to schedule a skin consultation!

Predict Your Results With 3-D Imaging

Due to Dr. Shaw’s numerous years of experience within the plastic surgery industry, it is uncommon for him to come across new and exciting things that compliment his status of expertise.  However, 3-D Vectra imaging has trumped this theory.
“3-D imaging and morphing technology has come a long way and will help my patients better understand the proposed surgery and together we can come to a visual agreement of intended surgical results,” said Dr. Shaw.  “Patients who have had the opportunity to experience the technology are very excited about it.”
When you come in for a consultation at the SHAW Center, your photo will be taken with a VECTRA 3D picture session.  Dr. Shaw will then be able to show you the various possible results of your aesthetic procedure due to special simulation software with the 3D picture.  You can play around with altered looks until you come across one that you desire.
Once you determine which image you like best, the simulation will supply a foundation for your surgical procedure.  The majority of patients are at ease going into their surgery since they have a better idea of what their desired outcome will be.
Try out an online demoto get a feel for how 3-D imaging works.  Although you can get a rough idea from the demo, a consultation with Dr. Shaw and the VECTRA software allows you to use a 3D image of your own body, “try on” different size implants, see the results from different angles, and choose the implant that’s best for you.

Facts on Photorejuvenation

The SHAW Center Spa offers a wide variety of peels, products and microdermabrasion.  One of our most popular procedures is photorejuvenation, a safe, non-invasive solution that can be customized to your skin type and condition.
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology is utilized during photorejuvenation in order to repair an array of benign skin conditions, such as facial skin imperfections, the signs of photo-aging, birthmarks, unwanted hair, unsightly small veins and other blemishes.  The light is altered to heat energy as it penetrates the level of the collagen below the skin surface.
Typically a cool gel is applied to the area being performed on and you may be asked to wear dark glasses to protect your eyes from the light.  The IPL hand piece is cautiously applied to your skin and pulses of light are applied.  Patients report minimal pain, similar to the snapping of a small rubber band.  An anesthetic cream may be used but is hardly ever necessary.  Depending on your desired results and your skin’s condition, the procedure is typically done in a series of 4 to 6 sessions to provide excellent long-term results.  Each treatment takes approximately twenty minutes.
Once you’ve had the treatment, you can return to work and all other normal activities within the same day.  By utilizing several treatments, you will notice a gradual improvement with very low risk and it helps uphold the “no down time” aspect.
If you would like more information about photorejuvenation or are interested in booking an appointment, contact the SHAW Center at (480) 767-1900.

Gushing Over GLAMGLOW

We can’t get enough of one of our newest skincare products, GLAMGLOW Supermud Clearing Treatment!  GLAMGLOW was formerly intended for exclusive professional backstage use in Hollywood, however, their products were released to consumers in 2011 and is rapidly becoming one of the most sought after brands in skincare.  Their products are recognized for providing instant, visible results through their patent-pending formulas containing real pieces of leaf with top of the line technology.
The Supermud Clearing Treatment is intended to help combat typical skin issues such as breakouts, discoloration, black and white heads, razor bumps, and in-grown hair.  The paraben, sulfate, and phthalate free formula is composed of an array of natural ingredients including eucalyptus leaf, peppermint plant, chamomile and Aloe Vera.  The skin-clearing mud pulls out dirt and blockage while a six-acid blend in the formula significantly illuminates and alleviates skin.  The extraordinary combination draws out dirt and pores with Activated-X Charcoal, resulting in velvety and wholesome looking skin.
One of the innovative technologies that the Supermud Clearing Treatment contains is PORE-MATRIX.  “Our Activated-X Charcoal is an Xtreme absorption carbon, attracting toxic substances into its mass up to 500 times its volume from all skin types, within the deepest & toughest areas.  Our new proprietary K17-Clay will better extract & encapsulate excess sebum oils, bacteria & toxins in a controlled stasis state, revealing a Pore-Matrix of extraction dots & areas, ready to be washed away for seemingly poreless skin,” according to www.glamglowmud.com
In order to use the treatment, apply a thin layer to your skin.  Once the product is applied, you can leave it on for 5, 10, 15 or 20 minutes.  The Pore-Matrix will then release specks of extraction.  Simply wash off the treatment with water and use as frequently as you need.  If you have questions about GLAMGLOW or are interested in purchasing, contact the SHAW Center at (480) 767-1900.

Why Are Peels Popular?

The skin on your face is a bit thinner than the rest of your body, warranting a little more TLC and attention.  Cleansing and moisturizing are great ways to preserve and maintain your skin but peels help take your skin the extra mile.  Chemical peels also have the ability to recuperate and lengthen the results from plastic surgery.
Today there is an array of chemical peels available; The Spa at the Shaw Center utilizes either one chemical at a time (glycolic acid or trichloroacetic acid) or a mixture of chemical agents.  These chemical mixtures are available in various strengths and combinations of chemical agents depending on your condition.  Our experienced skin care specialists tailor each treatment based on your skin and the condition you are seeking to enhance.
Chemical peels help improve numerous skin conditions.  The following are just a few among many:
·      Repair skin damage caused by years of sun exposure
·      Minimize fine facial lines on your face
·      Remove or decrease lip creases, crows feet and forehead lines
·      Minimize appearance of pores
·      Remove lesions and improve scarring
·      Improve acne, pimples, black heads, and clogged pores by killing the bacteria
·      Lessen freckles and age spots on the face or body

Chemical peel frequency depends on your skin condition and your desired results.  Downtime post procedure varies from patient to patient as well depending on the strength of the peel.  Typically patients report slight redness and peeling, which can be covered up easily.  If you are interested in a chemical peel, contact the Shaw Center at (480) 767-1900.
